A sinister motel

Since that tragic accident things have changed for the worse. I feel strange noises coming from the next room, and even knowing what caused it, my mind can't stop remembering that last image of them coming out in a body bag.

I had to stay somewhere when I got to the town of Larsson. I didn't have that much money so I decided to go to a two star motel where I had what I needed to live comfortably during my days of lodging. I had been hired for a job and it was very convenient for me to try to spend as little as possible until my next paycheck.

It was there that I met Don Antonio, who with his cane that could barely support his old body was taking out the garbage almost at the same time, leaving a glimpse of the room where you could see his wife, almost the same age, drinking tea with the radio on the table.

Doña Estela was very pleasant, although she never went out, as she used to peek out from time to time to wait for her husband, perhaps watching to make sure she didn't fall down the stairs. I always saw them at night, when I came home from work, but one day something really caught my attention.

I arrived at about 8:20 PM and noticed that they were both upset, much more so she who could be heard speaking inconclusive ravings. At least fifteen minutes passed like that until an eerie silence broke over the place.

I became quite concerned, as it seemed very strange to me. I knocked on the door a few times and got no response of any kind. It wasn't until I was leaving to get help that I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye of the doorknob jiggling.

I could feel the old man trying to open the door which I thought had a broken key in the lock. It was then that I felt a very intense smell of gas and the fall of a dead weight collapsing on the timbers of that floor.

The fire department arrived almost immediately on a call from a neighbor there who saw me freaking out about the situation. I wish it hadn't been like that, because she called them thinking there was a fire and at the exact moment of knocking down the door a spark ignited the place making it explode in all directions.

Everything had happened so fast that we couldn't even contain ourselves and we also suffered injuries, although the worst part was taken by one of the firemen who suffered second degree burns, even though he was wearing a proper fire suit.

A short time later the ambulances arrived and the police took charge of closing the place with their typical criminalistic tapes. Maybe because they wouldn't have another one or because something happened that I wasn't aware of. I can only assure you that they loved each other very much.

The following days passed normally, although for me it wasn't like that. I couldn't forget what happened even if I wanted to. I wondered what had really happened and if they were alive before that explosion that consumed their bodies completely. Maybe they had passed out, and if that call had been made by me, they might still be alive today.

After several forensic visits, it seemed that everything was going to come to nothing. The tape was removed and the place was inaccessible to everyone, including the motel staff. The number had been removed so that no one would try to enter the room wrongly.

I went to therapy because I couldn't sleep after that. I felt it was me under stress that was making me assume things, but then I realized that something was really going on on the other side of my room wall.

One night as I was trying to sleep I heard the sound of a door slamming very loudly. I looked out into the hallway and there was no one there. When I went inside that sound happened again, so I leaned my ear on the wall and I could notice that there was a radio on with the same theme I had heard the last time when I saw them alive.

I looked through the peephole in the door and saw everything as it had once been. The walls were not blackened by flames, I could see resting on that table a vibrant red radio, with the antenna unfolded to tune in better. And something that scared me too much, a shadow passing from the kitchen towards what I think was the bathroom of that one-room apartment.

I fell backwards away from the horror that I had seen and ran out of the motel in a panic. I didn't know what to think but I could feel a shiver invading my body and in turn causing my eyes to well up with tears, perhaps from fear or terror.

I went back inside asking if anyone had moved in and was told that the room had never been used since the accident. It was all really confusing, more so considering that I was already beginning to distrust my mental sanity.

I went to my room but it was not as I remembered it. This time its walls were ruined, with a dark and sticky texture that left its traces on the palms of my hand. A floor where I could see two silhouettes impregnated in the wood which felt weak and about to break; when I knew it was not my room, the door closed tightly and I fell several meters towards an unknown area.

My legs were completely broken, I couldn't even stand upright because of the pain. I looked up and saw the concierge opening the door with extreme caution. The glow of the motel's artificial light illuminated the place for a few moments until he decided to leave and close it.

I screamed at the top of my lungs in panic and terror until I faded into the darkness around me. I assumed it was the end of me, in fact there was no chance of getting out of there alive. I felt pessimistic but accepted that what followed was my death.

A light hit me full in the face and after shaking my head everywhere, a doctor asked me how I felt. I told him that my legs hurt a lot to which he replied that it was normal after the fall down those motel stairs. A nurse would give me painkillers right away.

Quite possibly it was my mind playing tricks on me, but I dare not know if any of it could have been real. I didn't want to think about it any more, but as I settled my head on the pillow a radio played; the old man who shared my room with me was there with his wife, who was serving him some tea.

Buena noche.
