Continuing my visit along Gómez Rubio Avenue in Cumaná, the capital of Sucre State, I’d like to share a tour of Santiago Mariño Plaza. It was my first time visiting this square, and I was struck by the number of trees; it is an ideal spot to cool off from the intense sun that characterizes this coastal city.
Upon entering the plaza, I noticed large trees, palm trees, and ornamental plants. Gardens line both sides, and there is a sign displaying the avenue's name; the plaza is located near the State Comptroller's Office.

I had seen that building several times before when heading to the city center via Arizmendi Avenue. Gómez Rubio Avenue intersects with it at the traffic lights, right where the plaza is situated. It has become a space where workers and passersby pause to cool off and rest from the intense heat the city is currently experiencing.
A sculpture of this historical figure rests on a reddish pedestal in the center. The ground is paved with caico tiles, with concrete sections on the sides. The gardens are separated by paving slabs that also serve as walkways, and there are traditional concrete benches scattered around. High walls separate the plaza from the surrounding residential buildings, and Guaiquerí Park is located very close by. After touring the plaza and admiring the gardens and sculpture, I spent a few minutes observing the surroundings. The abundant greenery is undoubtedly the plaza's standout feature, making it an important meeting point for the city's residents. Santiago Mariño was a prominent historical figure born on Margarita Island who participated in Venezuela's independence movement, specifically in the eastern region; a street and a bridge in the city bear his name in his honor.
