Life on Our Small Homestead: Where Chicks Grow and Cats Nap

Life here is always busy, but it is also full of simple joys. Every day brings something new to see, especially with our growing flock of chickens and our furry farm guards. π
--
We have a few roosters and hens in our yard. One of our hens has started laying eggs, while some of the others are busy raising their little chicks.
A few weeks ago, I shared photos of some tiny chicks. Back then, they were only about 2 to 3 inches tall. They looked so small and fragile. Now they have grown so much. They are already more than half the length of a ruler. It is amazing how quickly chicks grow when they have a safe place to live and plenty of food to eat.
Watching them scratch the ground, chase insects, and follow their mothers around is one of the best parts of raising chickens.
One chick in our flock is very special. It is the little black chick.

If you look closely, you may think it is sleeping because one of its eyes is always closed. But the truth is that the chick is blind.
Its story is a sad one. The chick grew up alone because it was the only egg that hatched from its mother. During the night, some of the other eggs disappeared. We are not sure if cats or rats took them.
Because it grew up by itself, some of the other chicks picked on it at first. Thankfully, things became better. A group of brown chicks accepted the little black chick and treated it like one of their own. They played together, ate together, and stayed close to each other. The blind chick rarely leaves their side from then on.
Seeing them care for one another reminds us that animals can form friendships, too.

We also have a few cats that help watch over the chickens.
Every morning, they patrol the yard and keep an eye on what is happening around the farm. They often chase away dogs and other cats that try to steal chicken feed.
Their presence helps keep the chickens calm and safe.

Of course, not every guard takes the job seriously. π
We have one cat who would rather nap than work. While the other cats are busy watching the yard, this lazy fellow can usually be found stretched out on a chair, sleeping peacefully. He seems to believe that guarding the farm can wait until after his next nap.

Even though he is not the hardest worker, he is still part of the family, and his sleepy face always gives us something to smile about.
Raising chickens and caring for animals teaches us patience and responsibility. From watching tiny chicks grow stronger each day to seeing our cats protect the flock, there is always a story waiting to unfold.
Life on a homestead may be simple, but it is never boring. Every day brings new memories, new challenges, and plenty of reasons to be thankful ππ£π±π±
