Caring Connections

avatar

I meet people every day over the phone at work. Some people are hard to talk to. I know this is business and I'm here to help you solve issues and complete the task I'm paid to do, but some people come onto my phone and I immediately feel a kinship. There may be something personal about their problem which I have experienced before, or even currently experience, like migraine. I identify with their suffering and we develop this tiny relationship on a call that I take with me through my day and sometimes beyond. I'm human, too.

Sometimes people question if I'm a robot. At times I have words I've repeated so often I sound a bit robotic, but I promise, I'm flesh and blood. The next time you are calling customer service, you may want to heed some advice: treat that person as though they are human, and recognize they can help, if you let them, and if you treat them respectfully, you may get over and above your expectations. We don't get paid for that part. You play into how well you're treated.

Hello @wandrnrose7. You are absolutely right when you say that the customer plays into how he or she is treated. I've found that if I don't start the conversation attacking the customer rep, their attitude is much calmer and doesn't jump defensive in a flash.

On the other hand, I've attempted to be as kind as possible. It didn't matter. The rep, I'm sure was either having a bad day or my questions were really stupid. Either way, I felt that person should seek another type career. It was surprising as I know they are sometimes on a recorded line for training purposes :)

Thanks for sharing.

You are absolutely right. We are continuously on a recorded line.
Thank you for joining in on the conversation. I appreciate callers like you and I've experienced reps like you describe, too. They need to find a better fit.

I agree with you, I have had this connection with someone on the other end of the phone. I always try to be nice to them.

It's nice while it lasts. It's a rare even that I get the same caller twice because of the volume of callers we receive.
I hope you're doing well and happy Saturday. 😊
