The Corner Store

Marty and Tia walked to the local shop with their meager earnings from cleaning lawns around their home. Marty, being the oldest and a boy, opened the door for little Tia. Tia was eight years old but small for her age. Marty just turned nine and he was stout. Stout was what Gramma called Marty. Dad said he was big-boned. It didn't matter to Marty what they said, he just liked to eat, and eat he did.

Tia walked through the store with wide, liquid blue eyes. Marty didn't like girls yet, but he understood that movies seemed to like girls with those kinds of eyes. He just knew she was small and he could protect her against Wilson, the neighborhood bully.

The back door banged open and Luther, the shop owner barked a command to Tia, "Why are you snooping around my shop??"

Tia visibly cringed and backed away from the doll she was admiring. She looked to Marty for help.

"Oh, leave her alone, Luther. Stop acting like an old snob!"
Luther narrowed his eyes and glared at Marty a moment then said, "Git on home, Marty, I won't tolerate your fresh mouth no matta what yer Ma thinks!"

Marty boldly walked up to the counter with two soft drink bottles. He slapped .25 cents on the counter and said, "I'll take these sodas, Luther."

Luther grumbled under his breath while running the charge through the cash register.

"You wish yer Ma a good day fer me, Marty." His eyes appeared to soften ever so slightly and he headed back to the rear of the store.
