The Specimen
Willow stepped out of the shower and dried as thoroughly as she could. The heat sucked the air from her lungs already, added to the heavy, moist bathroom air. No sooner did she towel her flesh but moisture returned to the skin. Willow pulled out the baby power container and tried to do damage control.
Stepping into the kitchen, she looked for a drinking glass then opened the refrigerator. A lone bottle of water sat on the shelf. Willow grabbed it out of the refrigerator and popped it open, draining half of the bottle in one swallow. She put the glass away unused.
Willow opened the calendar. Seven more days until a shipment would arrive. Her eyes moved from cupboard to sink and slid toward the door.
She didn't look right at the door because the throat pulse was so strong when she did glance at it that the pain would crumple her to her knees.
If Willow managed her remaining water supply right, she could make it until she was sent the next Necessary Shipment. Willow controlled her facial surfaces to mask all emotions, the suffocating, rising hysteria. She was trained for this. A small smile crept across her features. She smiled directly into the door orb. Her features now radiating inner peace and trust.
Johann turned his brooding eyes away from the orb's camera footage with a grimace mingled with utter revulsion, then snapped his documenting device shut. This girl won't crack! What can I do to get her to buckle?
