The Winds of Change
I've never witnessed government approved censorship in the United States until 2020. The days of free speech went out the window when the powers-that-be decided it was for your good that you couldn't leave the house without a rag over your nose and mouth.
At that time, it was decided that you could sit and eat without a face rag on and be okay, but if you got up from your table you had to wear a face rag on the way to the bathroom and back.
Social media sites were equipped with squads of fact-checkers online chasing after unruly truth-tellers who objected to "the science" that the government claimed was God's truth.
I learned a great deal about people during that period. Fear is a powerful manipulator. Families and neighbors were divided during this period. Doubt created division and misplaced trust separated friends. Lines were drawn in the dust between government supporters and detractors. Jobs were eliminated at a pen stroke for daring to refuse untested forced medical treatment for an illness no one could(or indeed can) determine the origin.
Government overreach has never, in the end, solved man's problems. Freedom should not be up for question. A strong nation protects the freedom of its people. A weak nation suppresses the freedom of its people. This past season, I feel was a trial run on what the government has in store for the future should a similar threat take shape on the horizon.

A rat over your mouth and nose doesn't stop anyone from speaking. I don't understand how this is related to free speech.
When someone else tells you you have to wear it for the good of others when there is no proof it helps, it is a symbol of compliance, not concern for individuals.
That's still not about freedom of speech.
I listened to a lawyer talk about this. It is legal to burn an America flag in a park because it is a form of freedom of speech or expression. But you can't just burn a random white flag because it has no meaning.
Similarly, refusing to wear a government-mandated mask is a demonstration of freedom of speech or expression. It's taking a stance for what you believe is right.

BEER.Yes!!! Incredibly irrational behavior. Folks stopped thinking and just did as told, no matter how absurd, or how harmful to themselves and their loved ones it would be. I keep hearing about teenagers who are "acting out." A few days ago, I said "after what we did to our children, those who are acting out are normal." I feel awful about what we did to our children, and are still doing. I hope history records this crap honestly, and doesn't white wash it so that it can happen again.
I now think there is no such thing as a good government. Any government, any entity that thinks it has the right to rule over humans, is evil right from the get go. So many of us cannot envision their lives without taxes, laws, returns, regulations, someone telling them what to do, to believe and how to act. Terrifying. They do not like it when I call them zombies, but that is what they are. Unthinking people putting one foot in front of the other as told.
I'm glad we can at least have a conversation here. Anywhere else on the internet, we are now dissenters for this type of thinking.
I reread 1984 as a refresher during the shutdown. I remember reading it as a young girl thinking what a horrible world that would be and now we have witnessed wrong think in real life. I shudder to think of the next phase of globalism. Thanks for adding your thoughts.

1984 was making the rounds back when Trump was elected. The Democrats were convinced Trump would usher in totalitarianism, and they wanted to be able to recognize it when it came. Now that it's here under their own candidate (not that Trump would not have eventually done the same thing), they cannot see it at all. That scares me, that our illusions can be so easily altered to produce truly blind faith in someone like Biden, or a political party of all things.
I, too, am at a complete loss. I really think the kids who are post-pandemic are not going to know right from wrong based on things I've observed.
