Throughout the month of January, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

January 21st, 2020, marked 100 years since Agatha Christie’s famous detective novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles was published in the United Kingdom. It was her first novel and was born from a dare by her sister Madge to write a story.

Agatha began writing the novel whilst working in a dispensary at Torquay's Red Cross Hospital during the First World War, and it became the first of around 66 mystery novels. It also introduced the iconic character Hercule Poirot, who would go on to feature in many of her other stories.

In 2020, the Royal mint celebrated a century of Christie novels with this £2 coin. The coin which featured a missing puzzle-piece design and the iconic phrase, ‘little grey cells’, which was first used by the character Poirot in The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

Available to buy from the Royal Mint’s website, the coin was struck in various different metals. Prices ranged from £10 for a brilliant uncirculated version to £1,115 for a gold coin. The Mint had no plans on releasing the coins into general circulation, so the knky way to get your hands on it was to purchase it direct at the time.

Prices for the BU coins have remained pretty stable since its release 2 years ago. What cost £10 to buy back then, will cost you on the secondary market roughly the same.

With a mintage figure of 2,250 the silver proof version originally sold for £72.50, and the Piedfort version for £115(800 mintage). Prices for these on Ebay are a food chunk under the original price. Looks like this coin woukd have been a poor investment if bought direct from the mint two years ago.
