A real mystery... Its a murder mystery!!

Throughout the month of December, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

On Friday 3 December 1926, Agatha Christie left her family home in Berkshire and drove away in her Morris Crowley, the beginning of an eleven-day disappearance. The car was found abandoned and Christie was eventually located at a hotel in Harrogate, seemingly safe and well but with no recollection of the previous fortnight’s events.

The bizarre disappearance gripped the nation, not just because Christie was such a revered writer, but because it was reminiscent of her own crime stories, a seemingly unsolvable mystery. Reasons for her disappearance have been theorised for years; perhaps it was due to her husband’s infidelity, an attempt to take her own life, or even a publicity stunt. Regardless, it placed Christie at the heart of her own mystery, one that remains unsolved to this day.

Although Agatha Christie published more than 60 novels, the Royal mint released this stunner to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of her first - The Mysterious Affair at Styles. The Royal Mint celebrated its release in 2020 with their 100 Years of Mystery collection.

Her books have sold over 2 billion copies worldwide. Making her the best-selling novelist in history. She also holds the Guiness World Record for the 'world's best-selling fiction writer'. Only the Bible and the works of William Shakespeare have sold more books than she has.

This fantastic looking coin is composed of 15.97 grams of 22 carat gold. The outer ring is an attractive red gold, contrasting with the yellow gold of the inner disc, which really makes the "murder mystery" design stand out from the coin background.
