Happy birthday David: immortalised in silver.

Throughout the month of January, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

Born on 8 January 1947 in Brixton, South London, David Bowie began life as David Robert Jones. By the time he was 19 he had taken on his iconic name and was taking the first steps in one of the most innovative and influential careers in the history of sound and vision. His music electrified generations, and his perpetual state of reinvention kept music fans enthralled.

The third coin in the ROYAL MINTs iconic Music Legends collection celebrates rock’s definitive chameleon with a design inspired by an image of the singer from his time spent living and recording in Berlin.

The inclusion of the lightning bolt motif from the Aladdin Sane era captures Bowie’s career journey, and the moment he finally put aside the props to emerge as an artist in his own right.

The silver proof, 1/2oz coin has a mintage figure of just 12500. Its hasnt been a popular coin with collectors, and is still available for purchase at the RM website. It has a very over inflated price of £65, and this is probably the key factor in its unpopularity, that and its a horrible looking coin.
