Coins, bank notes, gold, silver and other precious metals have played a huge role in shaping the stories of our lives. But its not just the intrinsic value of an item that makes it important or historic. New technologies, new designs, an error in the making or just sheer beauty can all compound to make an item irreplaceable and iconic.

In this series of posts, ill cover some of the coins and items that first got me stuck in the downward spiral of what is affectionately known as "stacking" and share with you fine folks the significance and role theyve played in history.

The Una and the Lion was a British £5 gold coin depicting Queen Victoria. It is recognized as one of the most beautiful British coins ever struck. It was designed by William Wyon in 1839, to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign (in 1837). The coins were first produced in 1839 and were probably intended for collector sets rather than for circulation.[SOURCE](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Una_and_the_Lion)

The Una and the Lion gold coin is considered one of the most beautiful coins ever made, simply due to its exquisite design and exceptional craftsmanship. Althougg It was created tocelebrate the inauguration of Queen Victoria in 1837, it wasnt finalised and mjnted until 1839. It was designed by William Wyon, a renowned engraver at the Royal Mint.

The coin features a stunning depiction of Una, a character from Edmund Spenser's epic poem "The Faerie Queene," and a powerful lion. Una is depictedas a young woman wearing a flowing gown and a diadem. Shes holding a scepter in one hand and a shield in the other. The lion, a symbol of strength and power, is depicted walking alongside her, and has a regal expression on its face. The intricate details of the design, including the delicate drapery of Una's gown and the intricate patterns on the shield and scepter, are masterfully executed. The combination of classical mythology and medieval imagery, along with the intricate design, makes the Una and the Lion gold coin a true work of art.

In addition to its stunning design, the Una and the Lion gold coin is also incredibly rare and highly prized by collectors. With only 400 coins(approx) minted, and with many of them now melted down over time, this makes the surviving coins even more valuable. Its no wonder why the Una and the Lion gold coin is considered one of the most beautiful coins ever made due to its intricate design, exceptional craftsmanship, and historical significance.
