Year of The Tiger

Years of the Tiger include 2022, 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, 1938.…. Repeating and going back 12yrs at a time. People who are born in the Year of the Tiger are known for possessing traits such as bravery, power, strength, competitiveness, and self-confidence. They are known for their charm and are popular with others. Additionally, Tigers work enthusiastically and confidently express themselves, doing things with a dominant manner. Alongside charming and popular, the characteristics of those born in the Year of the Tiger are also said to include confidence and courage, meaning people born under this sign are thought to be natural leaders.

Whilst the western world celebrate new year, well, ummmm, at the start of the year. In Chinese culture, which is what these animal years are celebrated in, the year of the Tiger starts from February 1st, 2022, and ends on January 21st, 2023.

David Lawrence’s reverse design shows the ‘King of the Beasts’ in Chinese culture, in a stance that emulates all of the animal’s desirable characteristics. To the right, the Chinese Zodiac symbol for the Tiger has been engraved. Her Majesty’s fifth portrait, by Jody Clark, features on the obverse.

The ROYAL MINT, as always, has left me rather underwhelmed with its coin design. I really think they need to pay their desingers a little more and encourage them to become more creative with their coins.

While some find the boring, plain, sparse designs enticing, I feel more needs to be done to bring the coin to life. You may or may not like the design, but the RM are assuming lots of people will, and have attached a hefty price to to their range.

5oz silver - £465
1/4oz gold - £670
1oz gold - £2506

Not a cheap coin!! Yet the 1kg gold coin has already sold out.... Prices for these coins do go up over time. The mint has been running this series for many a year. The original season 1 coins fetch quite a bit. The Perth mint have been running their Luna series and these have also increased in price over the years.

Wow, nice design. Soon many mints will be producing their own version of the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Tiger so I am anticipating their appearance throughout the year.
