A life project: The castle of Carlos Estraño [ENG/ESP]
Somewhere in the municipality of Naguanagua in the state of Carabobo - Venezuela, there is a house, which at first glance appears to be a church, but is a landmark for its architectural value and of course heritage among all the neighbors of the place, it is the castle of Carlos Estraño, who for many years became a life project for his person, aiming to build his house with his own hands, but that in his vision would be like a castle, as we can see in the photographs, totally like a castle.
It is inevitable to pass by this place and not take at least a photograph of this peculiar house or rather castle, which is imposing before the eyes of those who frequent the area, it is undoubtedly a jewel of architecture, which breaks with the conventional parameters of the type of housing construction.
En algún lugar del municipio Naguanagua del estado Carabobo - Venezuela, se encuentra una casa, que a primera vista parece ser una iglesia, pero es un punto de referencia por su valor arquitectónico y por supuesto patrimonial entre todos los vecinos del lugar, se trata del castillo de Carlos Estraño, que desde hace muchos años se convirtió en un proyecto de vida para su persona, teniendo como objetivo construir su casa con sus propias manos, pero que en su visión sería como un castillo, así como logramos apreciar en las fotografías, totalmente como un castillo.
Es inevitable pasar por este lugar, y no sacar aunque sea una fotografía de esta peculiar casa o mejor dicho castillo, que desde es imponente ante la visión de quienes frecuentan el sector, sin duda es una joya de la arquitectura, que rompe con los parámetros convencionales del tipo de construcción de viviendas.

At the gates of the castle, I had not planned to talk to Mr. Carlos Estraño, but luckily he was at home, and he kindly attended me, letting me go into his great castle, an aspect that I am very grateful for, for all his kindness and willingness to know the inside of his building, and between the talk he told me part of his life and this life project that began more than 40 years ago.
Mr. Carlos, with his 73 years, continues working as a blacksmith, a job he has been doing since he was 12 years old, and due to life circumstances he had to start working at an early age and leave his basic studies, but this was not an impediment for him to develop as a person in knowledge, This is shown in the construction of his castle, where he showed his practicality to design and build with his own hands, which has been an arduous work of many years, but that shows us the great willingness of Carlos Estraño to achieve his goals.
A las puertas del castillo, no tenía pensado hablar con el señor Carlos Estraño, pero por suerte estaba en casa, y me atendió amablemente, dejándome pasar a su gran castillo, aspecto que lo agradezco mucho, por toda su amabilidad y disposición en conocer la parte interior de su edificación, y entre la charla me contó parte de su vida y de este proyecto de vida que comenzó hace ya más de 40 años.
El señor Carlos, con sus 73 años, sigue trabajando como herrero, oficio que lo hace desde que tenía 12 años, y es que por circuntancias de la vida tuvo que comenzar a temprana edad a trabajar y dejar sus estudios básicos, pero esto no fue impedimento para que se desarrollara como persona en conocimientos, así como dando la practica de sus conociemtos, como se muestra en la construcción de su castillo, donde mostró su practicidad para diseñar y construir con sus propias manos, que ha sido un tradajo arduo de muchos años, pero que nos demuestra la gran voluntad del Carlos Estraño en cumplir sus objetivos.
As we see throughout the castle, there are a lot of symbols, which have meaning for Carlos Estraño. But, beforehand it is necessary to say about a very peculiar symbol, that it is a swastika, which has nothing to do with the Nazi ideology, as many may think at first glance. It is a symbol that has a more religious meaning for Mr. Carlos, who is a believer, and that this symbol also has its relation to beliefs such as Buddhism and even Christianity, therefore it is a symbol that has been used before the Nazi regime appropriated it in a certain way.
While we see other symbols related to Mr. Carlos Estraño, as we see some boxing gloves, because he practiced boxing for a long time, having an infinity of fights, one of the most exciting sports for him. Therefore, all these symbols are an exemplification both in belief and what Mr. Carlos Estraño thinks.
Como vemos en todo el castillo, se encuentra una gran cantidad de símbolos, que tienen significado para Carlos Estraño. Pero, de antemano hay que decir sobre un símbolo muy peculiar, que se trata de una esvástica, que no tiene nada que ver con la ideología nazi, como mucho pueden pensar a primera vista. Es un símbolo que tiene un significado más religioso para el señor Carlos, que es una persona creyente, y que este simbolo también tiene su relación a creencias como el budismo e incluso el cristianismo, por lo tanto es un símbolo que ha sido utilizado antes que el régimen nazi se lo apropiara de cierta forma.
Mientras que vemos otros símbolos relacionados con el señor Carlos Estraño, como vemos de unos guantes dr boxeo, debido a que el práctico el boxeo por un buen tiempo, teniendo una infinidad de combates, en uno de los deportes más apasionante para él. Por lo tanto, todos estos símbolos son una ejemplificación tanto en creencia y lo que piensa el señor Carlos Estraño.
In its interior design is a house distributed on two floors, a ground floor with a large living room where Mr. Carlos Estraño does his blacksmith work, besides having as first entrance a garage with capacity for two cars, which is continuously connected to the workshop, where there is also a compartment between the kitchen and the room of Mr. Carlos.
This house has a second floor, where there are a total of 9 rooms, living rooms, porches and even a bar that was recently built, to this is also added the fact that the house or castle continues to be improved, with constant work of Mr. Carlos, who has been thinking about the distribution of the same.
En su diseño interior es una casa distribuida en dos pisos, una planta baja con un gran salón donde el señor Carlos Estraño hace sus trabahos de herrerí, además de tener como primera entrada un garaje con capacidad para dos carros, que continuamente se conecta con el taller, donde también se encuentra un compartimiento entre la cocina y el cuarto del señor Carlos.
Dicha casa tiene un segundo piso, donde hay un total de 9 cuartos, salas, porches y hasta un bar que fue recientemente construido, a esto también se le agrega el hecho de que la casa o castillo sigue siendo mejorada, con constante trabajo del señor Carlos, que viene pensando en la distribución de la misma.
This house is the sample of the great will of a man, in building his dreams, and despite not being an architect or engineer, throughout his life he has learned several trades for the execution of his objectives. Although having learned blacksmithing was a reason to learn other activities such as construction, it was also the merit of creating from nothing a great work, which has been molding him with his hands and now with an advanced age, he still continues with the life project, which was raised decades ago.
For me, it was a pleasure to meet Mr. Carlos Estraño, who humbly let me enter his great castle and learn about his history and anecdotes as the person who materialized his dreams in a great structure, which has an important value in architecture and the arts in general.
Esta casa es la muestra de la gran voluntad de un hombre, en edificar sus sueños, y a pesar de no ser arquitecto o ingeniero, durante toda su vida ha aprendido varios oficios para la ejecución de sus objetivos. Si bien haber aprendido la herrería, fue un motivo de conocer otras actividades como la construcción, también fue el mérito de crear de la nada una gran obra, que lo ha venido moldeando con sus manos y ya con una edad avanazada, aun sigue con el proyecto de vida, que se planteó décadas atrás.
Para mí, fue un placer conocer al señor Carlos Estraño, quien con humildad me dejó entrar en su gran castillo y conocer sobre su historia y anécdotas como la persona que materializó sus sueños en una gran estructura, que tiene un valor importante en la arquitectura y en las artes en general.

This is definitely a rather odd but very striking house! As you know my friend, I was always around the Naguanagua side of Valencia and never knew this structure or maybe I didn't pay much attention in those days. No doubt it is special. Nice pictures of your part mate!
It's like this! What happens is that the house is in a location a bit difficult to get to, but you can get there by asking around.

I didn't have the attention to meet the owner of the house, I was only going to take pictures of the facade, but I didn't lose anything if I tried to knock on the door and talk to the gentleman, who kindly attended me and told me about the house. Greetings!
Quite peculiar, eclectic and extravagant is Mr. Estrano's castle. This house must be the attraction of the neighborhood, a distraction for the eyes and food for thought. I have no doubt that people always think about the meaning and intention the builder have upon using those symbols.
