In most of the occasions, the architectural works of cathedral type in Venezuela, date from the time of the Spanish colony in the country, and normally in almost all the cities or towns, cathedrals were built in front of squares, which were later renamed as Bolivar squares, and it could be deduced that they were almost the foundation points of that city or town. On this occasion, the cathedral of San José de Maracay, Aragua State, has a very important value for its infrastructure, which dates back more than 400 years. Although it is not the main cathedral of the city, it is one of the most important and valuable in this region.

It is estimated that its construction began in 1701, after a marquis of the time had ceded large plots of land to the Catholic Church of the country, in order to build this structure, which is currently located in the center of the city of Maracay, capital of the state of Aragua. It is located near other sites or places of architectural and patrimonial importance, such as the Girardor square, which is located in front of the cathedral, diagonal to the museum of anthropology and history of Maracay, which I am currently unaware of its operation, as well as other important points such as the Bolivar square of Maracay, the opera theater and other buildings of great patrimonial importance in the state.

With respect to its design, this cathedral has undergone several modifications since its construction, all due to nature's desmanes, passing through an earthquake and even a fire, which it suffered in the last century, which significantly altered part of its interior design. Although the total design of the work may not be original, it is estimated that its facade is preserved as it was mainly built, with a colonial baroque style, influence very marked by the time, in addition to the fact that it is estimated that at the beginning the cathedral contained only one nave, until several years later they managed to complement the temple with two more naves.

In its interior we can appreciate several columns that form arches between them, and a vault at the end of the structure, where the venerated images are visualized, in addition in its sides there are also several chapels, with their respective saints or deities of religion, structures that were incorporated after many years since its construction, so originally they did not exist.

While its exterior design, as I had said before, we can appreciate its facade influenced by the baroque style, besides being able to visualize a dome, as well as a tower with dome and clock, which at the top is also a sculpture of St. Joseph, which would be the main saint, which gives the name and this enclosure of the Cathedral of San Jose de Maracay.

In general terms, as I was able to appreciate this cathedral, you can see that it is in good condition, with the exception of some details, which may then require maintenance. On the other hand, in its interior there is not much entrance of illumination and it is barely illuminated with a dim light, which suddenly is helped a little with the few windows and doors of the structure, that even more windows had to be annexed, because previously it was very limited, and there was not a good ventilation and illumination of the place.

But without a doubt, this cathedral is a jewel of architecture in Venezuela. Knowing that its construction dates back more than 4 centuries, and still stands firm and imposing before the modernity of our time, that despite the problems that relapsed in many years, such as earthquakes, fires and even the lack of attention from the competent authorities, even this cathedral remains as a heritage of great architectural value for the city and the country.

All photographs are my own and were taken with a Canon T3i camera.

Greetings this way! Definitely a beautiful cathedral. Despite the damage it has suffered, which from what you recount has been several, it still remains stable. The colonial architecture (in the words of one of my Art History professors) is modest but full of charm. The contrast of the white in pediments, columns and frames looks quite good with the gold in its ornamentation. Excellent photographs, I send you a hug.

Fortunately, the colonial style façade is still preserved, but the rest may have been modified so much that it is no longer the original design.

The medieval churches, and in our case colonial, were always dark, all to manipulate reactions of fear and submission among the faithful, so the stained glass windows are located, almost always, near the altar, so that its reflection of colors served as an illusion of closeness to God, wonderful photographs of this beautiful church.

Good point you mention, I had not thought of it that way, even this church was known to be dimmer before, that was that over the years they opened some windows, but still remains dark, that I had to set the camera with higher settings to be able to photograph the interior of the church.

I can say from what I have seen that Maracay is one of the cities rich in this type of colonial type architecture, talking about churches, houses and cultural centers, as well as in the center of Valencia. This cathedral of San Jose looks very nice, I really like its great dome and tower.

Valencia and Maracay, as sister and neighboring cities, have certain similar features in their architecture and heritage, so it is common to find buildings that maintain the same style. Although each of these cities had a boom and development in different times, with respect to its architecture.
