DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: IMPACT ON CHILDREN THAT WITNESS IT

avatar

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog at this hour. The physical and emotional abuse endured by victims of domestic violence is surely going to have a negative effect on their mental well-being. However, while it is certain that the horror of domestic abuse will take a toll on the primary victims, children who are present during the abuse of their father by their mother or mother by their father or other family members are also strongly affected. There is a somewhat permanent impression on the physical and mental well-being of a child that is exposed to domestic violence. Well, sit back, relax and enjoy all that I have packaged for your reading pleasure.

Domestic violence is a common societal issue that is faced in all countries across the world especially among couples and the number of victims may be unbelievable if we are to consider the secondary victims such as children who witness abuse between their parents. The impact of domestic violence on children may start to manifest within a short period and it may last for a long time if it is not well managed. A child can be in a state of perpetual anxiety, fear and exhibit anti-social characteristics if they are always around their parents when they engage in domestic abuse.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is one major effect of domestic violence on children that are witness to the abuse by their parents. Even though they are exempted from the physical torture, the trauma of seeing their father, mother or any other loved ones abused can have a lasting damage in the development of their brains and mental health in general. These changes to their mental health can cause them to always recall or picture those moments in their head several hours or days after it has happened. It can also cause anger, discomfort, lack of concentration, distorted sleep patterns and so on.

Children that witness domestic abuse tend to practice all they have seen in schools and among their friends. They may start to bully their colleagues emotionally or physically, engage in sexual abuse, consumption of alcohol and so on. Witnessing a series of domestic abuse may alter the overall lifestyle of a child for the rest of his life because he'd see everything that is happening as a norm and wouldn't hesitate to act it out. Oftentimes, they may be be physically or verbally abused as well, maybe when they try to separate their parents, and this can take a toll on their well-being. They learn how to speak to people rudely and harm people from the domestic abuse experience from home.

In order to avoid all these, children should be protected from the scenes of domestic abuse and by so doing they have the chance to grow in a healthy environment that is devoid of violence. In addition, children should be taught better ways to resolve conflicts and disputes which will help to reduce the impact of domestic violence in their life and improve healthy relationships.
