The Natural Sweetness of Sugar Cane
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog at this hour. It is the first day of the last month of the year, December, and I wish all my esteemed readers a happy new month. I want you to know that it's not too late to achieve that goal of yours. Do not give up and at the end you'd realize that it's worth all the effort you have put in. Well, sit back, relax and enjoy all that I have packaged for your reading pleasure.
This afternoon, after lunch as I was heading back to the office, I spotted a man selling sugar cane by the road side. I used to be a very huge fan of sugar cane when I was growing up. We had a sugar cane plantation close to my family house and a day will not pass that I won't eat a bucket full of sugar cane with my friends.
I could remember vividly how the sugar cane plantation is always invaded my bush rats such as grasscutters. There are some times when we go to the farm to cut some sugar cane, we'd see how badly they have damaged them. I think they love it so much due to the sweetness as well.
It's more than three years that I last had sugar cane until today. I could remember that I had a bloody mouth the last time I had it which was caused from trying to bite the hard part. I injured myself and it pissed me off so badly that I said I wouldn't eat it again. But, I couldn't resist the urge today.
Sugar cane is loved by everyone because of its sweetness, as it name implies, it has sugar contents. Over the years there have been discussions about whether or not sugar cane is healthy, this is because of its sugar content. Several research have been carried out and sugar cane has been proven to be health and beneficial to humans.
Sugar can have so many health benefits and some of them include:
- It prevents cancer with the help of the minerals content in it. Sugar cane juice has high concentration of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese, which means it is difficult for cancer to survive in it.
- Sugar cane contains calories which provides the body with energy. The juice also contains glucose which helps to keep the body hydrated while boosting the energy level
- Sugar cane is an important ingredient for skin treatments. It contains glycolic acids that help to remove dark spots, dead cells and wrinkles from the body.
The prices of the sugar cane differs based on the size. The big ones cost #100 and the small ones cost #50. You can buy the big ones for #50 if you have good negotiation skills.

Interesting. How do you eat it? My Dad plants sugar cane from time to time, but he uses it to make candy.
Hello @mrprofessor
"Eating" here simply means I drain out the juice from the sugar cane stick and throw away the shaft. The juice is the only part I consume. Would it have been better if I say "I drink sugar cane?" lol.
As you can see in the pictures, the seller is scrapping off the outer layer whilst wearing a black nylon to ensure that his hand doesn't touch the edible part directly. He cuts into smaller sizes so that it would be easy to chew.
You can see the men in the third picture (in the background) enjoying their sugar cane 😁
Ah now I see, yeah I've drank it here in Brazil too. Dad drains the juice but then uses it to make candy, rapadura is the name.Something like this
This looks nice and I'm sure it will taste nice as well. Does your dad makes it for commercial purpose?
