Experiencia productiva.

Hola a todos, un gran saludo, espero se encuentren bien, en ésta ocasión hablaré un poco sobre una experiencia única que viví a partir del primer trimestre de este año, un trabajo que me propuse hacer con mucho esfuerzo, dedicación y compromiso; el cual fuí documentando en fotos, espero sea de su agrado.

Hello everyone, a great greeting, I hope you are well, this time I will talk a little about a unique experience that I had from the first quarter of this year, a job that I set out to do with a lot of effort, dedication and commitment; which I was documenting in photos, I hope you like it.

Quiero acotar que el objetivo de éste post, además de mostrar el proceso que significó para mí, es demostrar que podemos hacer grandes cosas cuando nos enfocamos en nuestro objetivo y trabajamos con disciplina y constancia por lo que queremos 💪.

I want to point out that the objective of this post, in addition to showing the process that it meant to me, is to demonstrate that we can do great things when we focus on our objective and work with discipline and perseverance for what we want 💪.

Se trata de una experiencia en el ámbito de la agricultura, más específicamente en la siembra de una especie de grano muy característico y popular en mi país, y que además está presente en el principal plato típico del gentilicio venezolano, hablo de las caraotas como le decimos aquí, o frijol negro como creo que le llaman en otros países de LATAM.

It is an experience in the field of agriculture, more specifically in the sowing of a very characteristic and popular kind of grain in my country, and which is also present in the main typical dish of the Venezuelan name, I speak of beans as you We say here, or black bean as I think they call it in other LATAM countries.

Bien, todo comenzó a finales del mes de febrero, cuando me propuse sembrar, al principio no había más que mucho follaje (o monte como le decimos aquí 😊) con más de un metro de altura para que se hagan una idea. Primero que nada corté toda esa maleza usando un machete (hay que tener en cuenta que el área total trabajada abarca unos 30 metros cuadrados aproximadamente). En días posteriores, luego de que se secara al sol toda esa materia vegetal, le prendí fuego a fin de reducir al mínimo la cantidad de basura en el terreno. Cabe destacar que todo este trabajo lo hice en la temporada seca del año.

Well, it all started at the end of February, when I decided to sow, at first there was only a lot of foliage (or mount as we call it here 😊) with more than a meter in height to give you an idea. First of all, I cut all that brush using a machete (keep in mind that the total area worked covers approximately 30 square meters). In later days, after all that plant matter had dried in the sun, I set it on fire in order to minimize the amount of trash on the land. It should be noted that all this work was done in the dry season of the year.

Ahora lo que sigue es picar o arar la tierra para dejarla lo más suelta posible esto con el fin de que las raíces de las plantas no encuentren tanta resistencia a la hora de desarrollarse, pero esto implicaría un trabajo gigantesco de mi parte, sobre todo por el esfuerzo físico y mental que hay que hacer para arar la tierra con un pico debajo del implacable sol de verano, en fin, una frase que siempre me repetía es "un poquito cada día, es mejor que mucho de vez en cuando" y así, poco a poco superé lo que sería la etapa más difícil del proceso en mi opinión.

Now what follows is to chop or plow the soil to leave it as loose as possible so that the roots of the plants do not find so much resistance when it comes to developing, but this would imply a gigantic job on my part, especially because of the physical and mental effort that must be made to plow the land with a pick under the relentless summer sun, in short, a phrase that I always repeated to myself is "a little every day, is better than a lot from time to time" and so on. , little by little I got over what would be the most difficult stage of the process in my opinion.

Ahora solo quedaba instalar un sistema de riego y a sembrar, a partir de aquí, comencé a documentar en fotos, lo que hasta ese momento había logrado, que para mi ya era mucho 🤣.

Now all that was left was to install an irrigation system and plant, from here, I began to document in photos, what I had achieved up to that moment, which for me was already a lot 🤣.

Una vez instalado el sistema de riego, al cual más tarde tendría que hacerle algunas modificaciones para optimizar el uso del agua, el siguiente paso era la siembra, una etapa divertida y con mucha expectativa, consiste en abrir un agujero con la ayuda de un chicurón 🤣, y depositar las semillas, entre 3 o 4 semillas por agujero y a una distancia aproximada de 30 a 40cm, en total ocupé 700 gramos de semillas. Esto tuvo lugar el 12 de marzo específicamente.

Once the irrigation system was installed, to which later I would have to make some modifications to optimize the use of water, the next step was planting, a fun stage with great expectations, it consists of opening a hole with the help of a chicurón 🤣, and deposit the seeds, between 3 or 4 seeds per hole and at a distance of approximately 30 to 40cm, in total I occupied 700 grams of seeds. This took place on March 12 specifically.

Luego de haber regado diariamente todo el terreno ya sembrado durante 7 días a partir del día de la siembra, comenzaron a germinar las semillas, en ésta etapa las plantas son susceptibles al ataque de algunas aves, en especial a las aquí llamadas guacharacas, que son una especie de gallina salvaje, a las que les encantan los retoños de caraotas🤣, por lo que durante un mes tuve que estar muy atento a este factor. Aunque eso no evitó que se comieran unas cuantas plantitas 😒.

After having irrigated all the land already sown daily for 7 days from the day of sowing, the seeds began to germinate. At this stage the plants are susceptible to attack by some birds, especially those here called guacharacas, which are a kind of wild chicken, which loves bean sprouts🤣, so for a month I had to be very attentive to this factor. Although that didn't stop them from eating a few plants 😒.

Otro de los factores primordiales era el riego, el cual constaba de un grifo rotativo nada más, este no alcanzaba a cubrir todo el terreno, por lo que tenía que moverlo de sitio cada 3 horas para poder regar equitativamente todas las plantas.

Another of the essential factors was irrigation, which consisted of nothing more than a rotating faucet, it was not enough to cover all the land, so I had to move it from one place every 3 hours to be able to water all the plants equally.

Para el control de malezas usé una escardilla, limpié concienzudamente y con mucha cautela para no dañar las matas. Esto con una frecuencia de una limpieza cada 15 días a partir del emerger de los retoños. Así me mantuve trabajando y prestando mucha atención al sistema de riego y control de malezas hasta que entró en juego la etapa húmeda del año, el invierno, etapa en la que ya no es necesario regar, además de que ya no había que cuidar las plantas de las aves, puesto que estas al tener más retoños y flores para comer en otros lugares, ya no les interesaba comer caraotas 🤣. En este momento pude descansar un poco y enfocarme en otras cosas, aunque de igual manera seguía con el itinerario de limpieza.

To control weeds I used a hoe, I cleaned conscientiously and very carefully so as not to damage the plants. This with a frequency of cleaning every 15 days from the emergence of the shoots. This is how I kept working and paying close attention to the irrigation and weed control system until the wet season of the year came into play, winter, a stage in which it is no longer necessary to water, in addition to the fact that the plants no longer had to be cared for. of the birds, since these have more shoots and flowers to eat in other places, they were no longer interested in eating beans 🤣. At this time I was able to rest a bit and focus on other things, although I still continued with the cleaning itinerary.

De esta manera, a los 2 meses, las plantas ya tenían un alto nivel de maduréz y estaban en plena etapa de floración, momento en el cual las abejas y cigarrones hacen su parte polinizando las flores para que puedan dar frutos. Pasada la etapa de floración, ya se podía ver muchas vainas que contenían nuestros preciados granos en un buen nivel de maduréz.

In this way, after 2 months, the plants already had a high level of maturity and were in full bloom, at which time the bees and grasshoppers do their part by pollinating the flowers so that they can bear fruit. After the flowering stage, you could already see many pods that contained our precious beans at a good level of maturity.

Acercándose ya al final de su ciclo de vida, las plantas comienzan a adoptar un color amarillo en sus hojas y tallos, así como en las vainas, esto es indicativo de que ya hay que arrancarlas para que no retoñen los granos en sus vainas. Quiero destacar que por alguna razón no se tomaron los tres meses completos que normalmente tardan en completar el ciclo de vida, si no que estas terminaron su ciclo 15 días antes de tiempo, coincidiendo así con un momento en el que me encontraba enfermo con fiebre y gripe, típico de la temporada de frío. Por esta razón no pude arrancarlas a tiempo, y ya habían comenzado a retoñar algunas vainas.

Approaching the end of their life cycle, the plants begin to take on a yellow color in their leaves and stems, as well as in the pods, this is an indication that they must be uprooted so that the grains in their pods do not sprout. I want to point out that for some reason they did not take the full three months that they normally take to complete their life cycle, but rather that they finished their cycle 15 days ahead of time, thus coinciding with a moment in which I found myself.

Al fin y al cabo, tuve que arrancarlas aun estando enfermo, para no perder lo que con tanto esfuerzo había podido hacer hasta ese momento. De aquí en adelante lo que seguía era colgar las caraotas para dejarlas secar y luego "majarlas" como le dicen aquí al proceso artesanal de sacar los granos de sus vainas. Este consiste en golpear las matas ya secas y en un ambiente cerrado para desprender los granos de las vainas.

After all, I had to rip them out even when I was sick, so as not to lose what I had been able to do with so much effort up to that moment. From now on what followed was to hang the beans to let them dry and then "majarlas" as they say here the traditional process of removing the beans from their pods. This consists of hitting the already dry bushes and in a closed environment to detach the grains from the pods.

El resultado final de 3 meses de trabajo, muchas ampollas en mis manos y quemaduras en mi piel, fueron 30 kg de granos ya comestibles para mi familia. Pero más allá de la cantidad que a mi parecer fue muy alta en comparación con lo poco que sembré, me queda la satisfacción de haber logrado mi cometido durante todo este tiempo.

The final result of 3 months of work, many blisters on my hands and burns on my skin, was 30 kg of edible grains for my family. But beyond the quantity, which in my opinion was very high compared to the little I planted, I have the satisfaction of having achieved my goal during all this time.
