King of Boys - My favorite Nigerian movie

avatar

Hello dear Hivers.
It’s my first time participating in the Hive naija community contest.
I should be scolded for not repping my country’s community more often haha!

That aside, the topic reads:

“We want to know your favourite Nigerian movies. What movie does it for you in terms of the story and overall production? Does it fit in the typical Nollywood tropes or not? What was your take-home from the movie?”

Reading this prompt, the first movie I thought of was the Nigerian Netflix film King of Boys.

In all my brief history of watching Nigerian movies, ever since I saw this one I’ve been practicing on how to brag about it to any one in opposition.

In terms of story line and production, this movie does it for me. Every character of each role was spot on.
The production was incredible, I thought I was watching a documentary.
Adding to the fact that I saw the movie in the cinema made it even more iconic for me.

THE PLOT.
A 2018 crime thriller Nigerian movie written by Kemi Adetiba.
A highly respected business woman Alhaja Eniola Salami (played by Sola Sobowale) also known as the King of Boys strives for a political position.
She has a daughter Kemi Salami (played by Adesua Etomi) that knows the business through her footsteps and a son Kitan Salami.
In a table of powerful men, she is the only woman present and happens to be the head.
Later on, distrust and division comes in as she reaches for higher power and political rank.
Irregardless of the betrayals and disasters, no one double crosses the King of boys and gets away with it.

As captivating as this film is, it still fit in a typical Nollywood setting.
The presence of the three powerful tribes (Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa) how they think and do their dirty political work, the accuracy of how politics is done by drawing powers from native doctors or water spirits, the background places used you can tell it was filmed in Nigeria, etc.

Furthermore, Unlike some movies that try to reduce violence and settle with a happy ending, this movie was different.
Some deaths were deserving but some even I took personal. That just shows how life is not a bed of roses even in movies.
The movie was also so unpredictable, It made me wonder what would happen next and I never get it right!

TAKE-HOME.
Thanks to this movie, my knowledge of politics widened. I discovered the in-depth of politics and how it really works; who controls who, the sponsors and the corruption.
It also taught me about ambition, Eniola had the strong desire to acquire power even as she came from nothing and with enough effort and ambition she achieved it.
No matter the amount of time it takes, you can achieve that goal you aim for as long as you don’t give up.

For the fact that a woman became the leader in a table of powerful men, I was more than inspired.

This is one movie I will never forget! And is so far my best Nigerian movie yet.

Thank you for reading!

I was so thrilled while watching the movie and I'm in Season 2 now but I can't remember the particular episode I stopped. Nigerian movies on Netflix are top notch just as corruption and dirty politics are day to day activities of some leaders in our great nation. We can only hope for the best and never give up on Nigeria. In life, we must keep pushing to get to the final line. Thank you for sharing.

Your choice of Naija movie is spot on, I watch King of boy some time ago and it is feels like yesterday in my mind.

The crews and cast of the movie did a great job and I'm very proud of their result in general.

Same here, despite the fact I saw it around 2018 when it came out and it's still fresh in my head says a lot! The movie was incredible, I haven't seen another Nigerian movie that has topped it for me.

I think founding is one of the major challenges of the Nigerian movies industry, if not we have many good actors who can compete with their international counterparts.

This is very true. We already have the talent, with enough funding and production, the sky is our limit.

Eniola Badmus had a dream...she brought AGGRESSION to it...refused to settle for the cliché "Women are weaker vessels"...Finally, she achieved her DREAM!

Happy to have you participating in the community. We're not big yet, but glad to have people interested in growing the community.

I liked King of Boys also, it was different from the regular and also had ACTION. It felt like a drag to me at some points though, but I still prefer it ten times over the KOB 2 Series

As soon as I saw the 2 is a series I just didn’t bother watching.
Nothing must ruin my favorite Nigerian movie.
