Your self-esteem will affect every aspect of your life. Your job, marriage, mental health, social life and so on, are a reflection of your self-esteem. There are some factors that determine if our self-esteem is high or low. These may include the outcome of your relationship with people in the past, that is, the way and manner with which you were treated by your boss in the office, your colleagues at work or even your partner in your relationship. The personal decisions, choices and assessments that you have made about your life is also a determinant of your self-esteem.

Self-esteem simply means to believe in yourself and having confidence in your potentials as a person. There are so many people out there who have low self-esteem due to one or more experience in their life. The same way we have high self-esteem, we also have low self-esteem.

A person that is confident in himself or herself may often be judged as arrogant and proud. But, it's not easy to be confident in oneself, it's as a result of knowing one's worth. On the other hand, people with low self-esteem are characterized as being faint-hearted and overly reserved. They do not have an idea of how much they worth. They do not know they can move mountains only if they believe.

However, in order to increase your self-esteem, you have all it takes in your possession. There are some changes that you can make to improve the way you see yourself and boost your overall view about life. This may include getting rid of all the negative thoughts about yourself such as your looks, performance, skills and building up a positive one. Have you been talked down about your appearance? Or you have been rated low due to your performance? Or have you lost several opportunities due to lack of a particular skill and you have given up on yourself?

Identifying the triggers that reduce your self-esteem is a good point to start the change process. It is expedient to identify the toxic people in your life that make you look down on yourself or the places you visit that make you feel worthless. You can start a gradual change when you know what exactly triggers negative thoughts in your mind because you'd know how to handle it better when you are conscious of it.

It could also be helpful to question and challenge your decisions. There are times when you could be quick to conclude on some issues or constantly seeing negativity in everything around you, then you have to challenge your thoughts and always see good in everything. The ability to focus on positives is key to improving one's self-esteem and confidence in life.

In addition, do not try to use other people's standard to define your happiness. This is simply because you will definitely find people that will be better than you in areas of life. Social media have even made it worse with people living a fake life to impress others. We get frustrated with the type of life we live when we see our friends flaunting wealth on social media but we fail to forget that people only share the finest parts of their lives and conceal the bad ones.
