The RAINY SEASON IN NIGERIA

The raining season is one of the three seasons in Nigeria, West Africa, and we are presently in the season at this time. This is the season that so many people look forward to for various reasons. The farmers look forward to the raining season for the supply of abundance water supply to their farmlands for rapid growth and development of their crops. Farming is very important to the economy of the country because this where we get most of the foods that we consume. During the dry season it is very difficult to plant healthy crops due to lack of adequate water - the few people who have the resources make use of irrigation or use watering cans to provide water to their crops.

Also, the dry season is predominantly characterized by a harsh and hot weather, so we often anticipate the beginning of the raining season for a more cool and calm weather. The raining season is not only a blessing to the farmers but to everyone who enjoys a less harsh weather. The sun sparingly shines during this period because it rains most of the time, thereby reducing the heat.

Well, we can keep going on and on highlighting the benefits of the raining season but it doesn't come without some sort of disadvantage if the period isn't well prepared for. For example, the raining season is known to result in flooding and destruction of houses that do not have adequate drainage system. In Nigeria, there are some people who are fond of also throwing their wastes inside the drain or inside the river which results to blocking the flow of the river or drainage and by extension causes flooding that destroys people's properties.

Erosion isn't left out as part of the disadvantage of the raining season. Roads that do not have adequate drainage system to channel the water also cause erosion that wash away the upper level of the soil. In a city or village where the roads are untarred the raining season will not be enjoyed by them due to the deterioration of the roads. On the other hand, constant washing away of the top soil will also reduce the fertility of the soil, which means the soil may less than productive as it is supposed to be.

In addition, the number of accident recorded during the rainy season is much as a result of the bad weather. Most times the roads are slippery making it difficult for the drivers who are on high speed to control their vehicles. Apart from that, some driver's vision get blurred when the rain is too heavy and they may refuse to park their car and wait for the rain to reduce. Drivers who do not take their safety as a priority end up as accident victim due to bad weather.
