The Unique Look and Taste of Asaro - Yam Porridge

There are so many mouth-watering foods in Nigeria that would make you forget your name for a moment once you have a taste of it. I have had a bite of lot of food from different cultures in Nigeria, some I love, some I like and some I'm not too sure if I'm going to be a fan.

On the list of the foods that I love is the Yorùbá food known as Asaro. Asaro is a mashed yam porridge that has a beautiful look and awesome taste.

Asaro is unique because of its secret ingredient that makes it look and smell nice. The secret ingredient for me is palm oil. There are different types of palm oil, the original and adulterated. The adulterated palm oil may not bring out the aroma and taste that a top-notch porridge should have.

The other ingredients for preparing Yoruba asaro is tuber of yam, palm oil, pepper, tomatoes, onions, seasoning cubes, thyme and curry, salt. Some optional ingredients include ponmo, smoked fish, stock fish, locust beans, crayfish.

Asaro used to be a local Nigerian food but in recent times it has become an elite food that is sold in most restaurants, including five-star hotels and restaurants. It is also a common food in events such as wedding ceremony and birthday parties in Nigeria. This shows how it has evolved from time.

It can be eaten as breakfast, lunch or dinner.
