Meat Market Activity in My City

Meat is still a necessity for humans, at least as a complement to food. There are various types of meat sold at the meat market center in my city. Local beef, broiler, lamb, mutton, duck and chicken, both broilers and local chickens.

In Indonesia, the need for meat is indeed one of the urgent food ingredients, apart from consuming fish, people also like to consume meat. To meet the needs of the community, it is not uncommon for the government to import meat from abroad.

India is one of the biggest beef importers to Indonesia. Not recorded in March 2022 with a volume of 16,464 tons. Followed by Australia 4,627 tonnes, the United States 889.65 tonnes, New Zealand 734 tonnes, Spain 99.4 tonnes, and other countries 2.7 tonnes.

Even so, at that time the Ministry of Agriculture announced that the need for imported beef/buffalo meat in 2022 was 266,065 tons, down 6.4% compared to the actual import of buffalo/beef meat in 2021 which amounted to 284,277 tons. This year's imports include stock reserves of 58,866 tons.

The national average price of beef at the consumer level tends to fluctuate. In the 1st week of January 2022, the average national beef price was IDR 118,900/kg.source

The data above proves that imported beef supply is still the preferred market in Indonesia considering the limited stock of local livestock and the slightly higher price of imported beef.

Meanwhile, for the needs of lamb, goat, duck and chicken, the market in Indonesia still relies on local meat stocks. Various efforts have also been made by the government so that meat stocks are available in the market, such as the development of integrated animal husbandry for the community and so on.

In Aceh province, the demand for meat can also be said to have a high volume, especially during kenduri celebrations such as; Mawlid Nabi, Hari Meugang (tradition of eating meat), to other important days, even Eid Al-Fitr to Eid Adha. And usually the supply of meat in the markets also exceeds the daily quota for its availability.

This morning I went around the meat market in my city, the atmosphere was a little busier than usual, especially since some people are still celebrating the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. I also captured the atmosphere of the crowd at the meat market using my Xiaomi Poco cellphone camera.
