Cupids and Cappuccinos

Armed with my coffee-related questions, I delved into the blind dating show with curiosity and a love for a good cup of coffee. I wasn't sure who the contestants were but the coffee show allowed only coffee related questions, meaning, all the contestants shared one thing in common with me–their love for coffee.

The first person I met was Brenda. She smiled warmly as she directed me to the studio. Brenda was a decent, kind and jovial young lady. Our friendship goes way back; the day at the café when she mistakenly spilled her freshly brewed coffee on me and instead of getting mad, I simply complimented her taste in coffee. Ever since then, we've been coffee buddies.

“Welcome Wongi, the show starts in fifteen minutes. Have you got your questions ready?”

“Yes”.

“And you're sure you can do this?”

“As sure as a barista's perfect pour in a latte art competition.” I said, hoping she would get the joke.

She smiled at the joke.“Great! Thank you for doing this. I will lead you to your potential suitors now.”

I walked in and everything seemed serene. The room mirrored a dimly lit café filled with the comforting scent of freshly ground coffee. Three of the contestants sat upright and they had fake smiles on. The last contestant by the far right didn't have a smile on but he emanated a gentlemanly demeanour.

I greeted all of them with a smile and assured them that my questions weren't going to be tough. They were simple day to day questions that required genuine answers. Soon after, Brenda walked in, took the host' seat and the show commenced.

Brenda made her introductory speech and then the spotlight was moved to me. My tummy churned with nervous tension. What if none of the candidates could answer my questions ideally? Would I leave the show with no partner? I pondered.

“Okay gentlemen, the first question. If we had a cappuccino together, what activity would be the perfect side to enjoy with our coffee?

My first question was tailored to reveal what activities the suitors liked to do. They shared diverse answers ranging from watching sports, hiking and gaming. The fourth contestant' answer was reading a book.

I smiled lightly. I took cappuccinos whenever I wanted a relaxing and well deserved pause in the midst of daily life. During these moments, I pair my cup of cappuccino with activities that do not stress me and reading a book is one of such activities.

“Okay, the second question, gentlemen. Do you think coffee is best enjoyed alone or with company?

This question was crafted to unveil the suitors level of companionship. I am one who loves to share my coffee moments with my partner and so this was an important question for me.

The contestants all beamed with energy as this was an easy one and yes it was, but the reasons mattered the most. The first contestant said alone and he had his reasons. The second contestant said together and he gave an interesting reason to back that response up. The third and the fourth both said ‘together’ with equally captivating responses.

Once again, I smiled at all of the contestants as their responses has taken me aback. “Alright amiable contestants, the third and final question. Are you into experimenting with coffee blends or sticking to classics?

This was the ultimate question and it was going to determine how open-minded and dynamic the contestants are. This is because, people who enjoys experimenting with coffee blends may be adventurous, open-minded, and willing to try new things. On the other hand, those who who stick to the classics may be static when it comes to decision making.

The first and third contestants said they were sticking to the classics as the classics are their style. The second contestant said he would like to experiment occasionally but the classics would always be his go-to. The fourth contestant confidently admitted that he loved experimenting with coffee blends as there is always a new coffee magic to discover with each new blend.

My eyes lit up with joy. Sticking to only one type of coffee flavour was going to take away the fun from coffee. I liked trying out new coffee flavours and finding a partner who liked experimenting as well was just perfect.

“That was amazing! Lady and gentlemen, that would be all the questions for today. So for the reason we all gathered here today, ‘who would be the lucky one?’” Brenda asked as she looked in my direction.

“I will pick contestant four” I said as I looked in his contestants direction. He smiled and he had the most charming smile I had ever seen. Now I realized why he didn't carelessly throw his smile at the beginning of the show.

“So contestant Oliver, you are the lucky one. Do you agree to this match?” Brenda asked.

“Yes I do” he said as he got up and stretched fourth his hands in my direction.

Without giving it a thought, I dashed in his direction and placed my hands in his. This was definitely the beginning of something beautiful and possibly, undying.

I loved the ambiance of that coffee shop, with dim lighting and the aroma of freshly ground coffee, ideal for the theme and for that coffee-flavored blind date.

I guess the show was trying to emulate a cafe just for the blind date.

Thank you for reading me☺️.

Nicely written! I have heard of people meeting in coffee shops so I suppose it does happen. I tend to make mine at home though, old military habit. Dark roast, no sugar, no cream!

Oh, it's great to know you were in the military. Mind if I ask, How was the experience?

Dark roast, no sugar, no cream!

Woah. I've tried this out a few times but, I think adding Sugar and cream usually does the trick for me.

It was fun for the most part, but the again I was an officer. I like a good dark roast with complex flavors. Honduras or Costa Rica are usually pretty good in my experience.

Nothing wrong with using cream and sugar!
