Wandering Whispers

Thomas angrily switched off his television as he snickered

"Liars!" "A bunch of liars. All lovers are liars! There's no such thing as happily ever after." he took a sip of the only thing that made sense to him; his latte. Coffee felt like the only true and meaningful thing in his life.

Thomas used to be a very vibrant young kid with so many dreams. He had imagined how his future would be as a kid; fun filled and pleasant but currently, he was living the direct opposite. His life was devoid of imagination. Devoid of dreams.

Things fell apart when he was just twenty-six. He was living the dream. He had a well paying job, an amazing looking apartment and was in a relationship with the world's most beautiful girl–Jane. He planned to propose to Jane at the last ever family dinner he attended, but that was when Jane broke the news. She got entangled with Tom, his best friend. That wasn't even the worst part. The worst part of it all was the fact that she was seven weeks pregnant with Tom's child at the time.

Right there, in front of everyone, she looked Thomas in the eyes and professed her love for Tom. This left Thomas totally devastated. He had considered suicide so many times but something always held him back.

"What could I have possibly done wrong?" Thomas grimaced. It had been six years but each time he remembered the events of that day, fresh tears always rolled down his puffy cheeks.

"What ever happened to bro code? Was that even a thing? How could Tom live with himself after sleeping with and snatching his girlfriend?"

Just like clockwork, the ever emotional Thomas' walls came crashing down. He never really forgave Jane or Tom. In a bid to still the pain, he retreated into his shell. His life had become mundane. He was layed off from work and consequently thrown out of his former apartment. Nothing mattered anymore. The only way he kept in touch with the world was through his TV and his mails.

''Ah! the mail. It's been ages since I checked those" the disconsolate Thomas walked outside his house for the first time in a week.

Source
"The church, Gigstan companies, Wildwood avenue…" Thomas shuffled through the mails till he came across one without an address or a name. It was sealed with a stamp of some sort. One part of him was eager to tear up the envelope and consume its content but another part of him was sceptical. "What if it was a time bomb waiting to explode, or a letter from Jane?" He thought out loud. He wanted nothing to do with Jane so the former would have been a better option for him.

Reluctantly, he shoved the strange mail in his left hand and tossed the rest of the mail in the trash.

"Let's go uncover this mystery" he said blandly as he trudged into his uninviting apartment.

Out of curiosity, he immediately tore open the mail.

Once I grow up, I would love to travel the world. Explore the diverse cultures and have a great time.

Thomas stared blankly at the paper on his hand. He was either hallucinating or someone was messing with him. He had a list of a thousand and one dreams as a kid but travelling the world was at the top of the list. Life came at him so fast and he never really sat back to think about what he truly desired. He was more concerned with what other people desired and always went out of his ways to make these desires come true.

At that point in life, he had two options; stay in his wretched apartment for the rest of his life or actually make something out of his life. He may have lost his sanity but he didn't lose his sense of proper reason.

"Yes! This is what I'm going to do! Travel the world!". He prowled to his cushion–the only cushion in his house– and plunged on it. This felt like the right thing to do; go out and bring his childhood dreams to light.

Thomas threw his right leg on top of his left leg. "Where do I go first? Egypt? Italy? France maybe?". He was a sucker for history and it was only right that he began this new phase of his life in a place where he actually wanted to be. It was really amusing how a single mysterious mail could bring back a sense of purpose to his life. Maybe this was nature's way of putting him back on track.

Love, Wongi ✨

When life deals out those sucker-punches, it can be a long time before a person can get back on his feet. The mystery letter was a fun device. Maybe it was from his childhood self!

Yes yes. Maybe it was from his childhood self. That would have been a nice angle.

YOH! Jane played him dirty, but it's a blessing in disguise that it happened before they settled down. At least he only had a broken heart to mend, and not a broken marriage too.

Hmm, I am impressed that he resorted to latte and not alcohol to cope, that's good for him. lol. The letter was indeed a great rescue for him to follow his childhood dreams.

Humbe😊😊😊❣️. Thank you so much for finding time to read one of the fictions I've come up with in a long while.

Thomas knew better than resorting to alcohol. Like he said, he didn't lose his sense of logical reasoning too.

Yeah the story title caught my eye and it was captivating to the end. I like that for him to still have his senses and a promising ending!💫😊

Heartbreak and betrayal from two of your favorite persons can be depressing. It leaves you questioning your sanity and your worth.
I enjoyed reading this piece😊 @wongi

There are moments in our lives when everything collapses and the life we thought was perfect goes down the drain. The man found hope with that mail and starting a new life just for himself. I really liked the story.

Thanks for sharing.
Good day.
