This Cat Is Killing Me! (Animal Portrait In Gouache)
gouache on paper
40 x 30 cm (15 ¾" x 11 ⅞")
This painting is based on a photo by Armando Sodano which I found in this blog post right here on the blockchain, where he shares his works as @armandosodano on a regular basis.

So why am I saying "this cat is killing me"? Well, the painting I'm showing you today is actually the third time I've painted this particular cat. Since it's from a reference photo, the darn cat looks more or less the same every time, but I just can't get a handle on how to do his fur! It still isn't right, but at least I don't hate this third version. That's a start.
Personally, I believe the Universe is conspiring against me, or something of that nature. Cats have nine lives, they say, so I guess I'm doomed to paint him another six times. This is probably all part of the Universe's employment program, to get me through the Covid 19 quarantine. That's my theory, and I'm sticking with it!
I'll keep you posted.
No! I have not made up this story to amuse my peeps. Here are the previous two incarnations:
Nein!

Thank you very much :-)
Great work, mate! 👏
To me, this is already a masterpiece... but keep drawing this beautiful art-loving cat!
Ciao!
Thanks for the encouragement. This one is driving me bonkers! I look at painting like music - I can't sit down at the piano and expect to play a new tune perfectly; it takes practice by repetition. That's what I'm doing.

I do like the third version the best. The background adds a lot of interest to it. Im impressed with your perseverance though. I typically give up on art when it doesnt come out right haha. I often paint the canvas white and try something else
Thanks. The background goes on as soon as I realize something went wrong. Why? Because I try to finish my stuff, i.e. not give up too soon. Part of this is, to use the freedom of a lost cause experimenting with stuff. I don't keep a sketch book, but I still save the mishaps for a while, for reference. I hope this makes sense.
The third version has a detailed background 'cause it was a safer bet. Unlike watercolor, gouache is pretty opaque and mistakes can be painted over to a degree, i.e. the time for secondary detail is most likely not wasted.
That's totally O.K. and makes perfect sense with regards to the environment.
With watercolor it's paper; no painting over. Might as well use it up. Stuff that's totally lost I use also, the reverse side for testing. Plus recycling, and I'm golden.
Hammer Bild
Danke. Wird so langsam :-)
