A Sunday Walk

A Sunday walk, and a day late #sublimesunday.

Yesterday was a gorgeous day. Not too hot. Not too cold. A little breezy. Very fresh. Sunny. Bright, with a few clouds.

I ended up with a few folks in an area not far from me, in a place I had driven by before. There was something... something... I remember wanting to photograph, but I couldn't remember what it was. So off we went, and drove in a general direction until we happened to happen across something that looked photoworthy.

There were definitely some great photo opportunities, which I shall show, beginning with some #crappycameraphotos of a couple things we found.

I really liked that caboose. I've always had a soft spot for trains, and cabooses in particular. The old film feel of those pictures really works well, too. I like'em.

And now a completely different photo of that caboose, this time in HDR format. Now you can really see where the caboose has been beaten up.

The caboose was right at the end of a set of rail tracks maintained by the volunteer Wilmington and Western Railroad. It was such a nice day we decided to walk down and follow the tracks a way. The tracks run parallel to an athletic field with some baseball and softball diamonds, and there were games being played. It was really fun to listen to the crowd, the occasional crack of a bat against a ball, and the crowd cheering while strolling along in the sun on the tracks. It kinda brought me back to my childhood; I was never the one playing the sports. Rather, I was always the one walking and enjoying the day.

Ultimately we came across a building that had a plaque in the front. This building was the original school for black children in New Castle County, built in the early 1900s.

Please note the awesome looking firehydrant in the yard. Of course I had to get a closer picture of it.

What I really liked about this hydrant is that it was by the same manufacturer that I came across just the other day! It's a Kennedy, from NY. I think I might have squealed in delight.

We took a different way back to the car and came across this firehydrant with a blue cap...

... this fire hydrant with a bright red cap (also a Kennedy! Two in one day! SQUEAL!)...

... and finally this gas tank and pump which do not seem to be in use anymore.

The best part of the entire walk, however, was walking past an auctioneer's yard. We missed the auction by a week, but the yard still held a few items that apparently didn't get sold; a couple of tractors and a couple of cars.

Tractor 1 I've named this tractor Vincent

Car 1 I've named this bad boy Bob. Bob has seen better days but, man, the stories I bet he could tell.

Car 2 Name: Raoul. Raoul also has some good stories, I'm sure.

And finally, they had a fire hydrant up for auction. I shit you not. This was sitting here in front of their office. I think I want it.

Oh, Victor. Homerun! I heard the crack of the bat at the first fire hydrant and knew it was gone when I saw the Dodge.

That's just too much fun. I have a cousin to your Raoul. Owned by by new to me brother and restored by him and my nephew. It was my mother's car.

The tractor is mid 60s I think. Shape of the hood and stuff.

What a wonderful post. Thank you!

It was just an absolutely beautiful day! I was a little jealous watching a lot of cyclists cycle, but I was outside and that's a good thing.

Do you still have that car?? That's gorgeous!

OH, you do indeed love fire hydrants don't you? These are really incredible. I love them! The old cars are great too. Seriously, I think you could frame some of those fire hydrant pictures. There's something so... charming about them. Some seem perky and fresh like a newly uniformed soldier, while others look like they have seem better days, but wow do they have character!

It's a really bizarre infatuation, for sure, I'll admit. It started when my boys refused to let me photograph them in front of an historical building; I photographed the fire hydrant in front instead, and explained that not only did it not complain, it stood there as long as I needed it too! 😅
