Guns, Cars, and Marijuana

I know it must seem like I've been ragging on the Second Amendment and gun rights the last few strips. I'm really not.

"Why do you want a gun?"
"Because it's my right as a citizen."

That is not a legitimate answer. There are dozens - hundreds, even - of legitimate reasons for wanting to own a gun that are not "because I'm allowed." I own a vehicle because I need it, not because I'm allowed to own it. Likewise for everything else I own; every item serves a purpose.

So, why guns (a second amendment right) and not marijuana (a tenth amendment right)?

I kind of disagree with you a bit there! I think it's imperative to own a gun because you can. There goes a lot of responsibility along with that such as proper training but I think everyone should make it an obligation to undergo that unless there are obvious circumstances where it is a bad idea such as mentally or emotionally unstable people.

I own one partially because I can but I also find it incredibly important to do so. The rights and freedoms of this country were won because of firearms and it's our duty, in my opinion, to not let that be broken. Look what happens to disarmed countries such as Venezuela.

Off my soapbox now :D

In a way I do agree with this - it certainly works in Switzerland. If owning a firearm were an obligation and was coupled with correct training and education to respect the weapon, I would very possibly support that. My issue is actually with the idea that firearms should be available to as many as possible by going to the local store and picking one up. I do have an issue with that. I know it's not like walking down to the local 7-11 to pick one up, but in some areas it's not that far, either.

But... I am digressing (and on the verge of soapboxing, too! 😂) In the arena of freedom, what makes one freedom more important than another, and what ultimately constitutes a "freedom"? Those are ultimately the two questions I've been wrestling with in these 'toons, with a third ancillary question of what happens when two or more freedoms conflict. Ultimately I think it comes down to what society deems as appropriate, but that leaves further questions of why society protects certain ideals and not others.

Sometimes I think I should have never left college so I could just debate these things all day, write about them, and get paid for it. Maybe that'd beat working for a living. 😁

There's at least one place where owning a gun is technically required by law. In Kennesaw, Georgia, local law says that “every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm.” (they also must undergo training)

When are they going to require us to possess marijuana? But hey! I can grow it because I live in VIRGINIA!

According to recent Virginia legislation, you can grow your marijuana plants inside or out, as long as they comply with the requirement that they are not accessible by anyone under 21. They must also be kept in a location where they cannot be seen from a public thoroughfare or another public place.

I get the whole gun rights argument thing, my parents were USPSA competition shooters, and I was always at gun shows on the weekends as a kid, even grew up shooting. I now wouldn't even consider allowing a gun in my home, although I don't need to go into the reasons for it.

We all place different freedoms at different levels of importance all around the world, and Americans definitely keep the right to bear arms high on that list. For me, economic freedom, freetime, and local spending power rank much higher than the right to bear arms or vote.

There is actually a knife rights org in the US, not a joke, and they campaign to have the same rights as gun owners. Believe it or not, thanks to the NRA, there are more gun rights in the USA than knife rights 😁.

Awesome comic strip, very thought-provoking for the comments section.

Thank you for the thought provoking reply. I was aware that there were places where knives were not allowed but guns were, but I was not aware of a knife rights organisation. That's interesting. I would have used that more often if I knew of it.

I do not have any guns either, mostly because I just don't want one. I do, however, have bows for archery. There are five in the house, one for me and each of my boys, and one that has been outgrown. We don't hunt, but we do like to go to the range and shoot at the targets.
