Market Friday, at the Beach!

avatar

Last Friday, just a scant few days ago, I took the family down to the beach for a day trip. It was supposed to be a bright, sunny, warm day; instead it was slightly overcast with a breeze that made me wish I wasn't wearing shorts. It put me in just the mood to process all my photos as black and white, so I'll take that as a win!

One of the first things to understand about my boys and the beach is that they really don't like "the beach" itself; like me, they much prefer the aura, the shops and, of course, the boardwalk and the arcade.

The first stop we had made was called "Game On" and is a used electronic games store. I did not take any pictures of that, because it's rather non-descript, but my youngest left with a new-to-him Nintendo DS (one of the original ones) which he is thrilled with.

Second on the path was The Shops at Rehoboth Mews. There are several of these "back alley/lane" series of shops at Rehoboth and they're quite charming.

I like non-mass-produced-anything, quite honestly. Plastics and ceramics and whatever that are obviously mass-produced have a place, but I really like items that are built by hand, and that involves architecture and engineering. The sidewalk here is particularly fascinating to me; it's brick and definitely hand-laid to the point that it is beginning to wave and bend. It has a class all it's own.

These small out-of-the-way shops are really quite adorable and serve a variety of niche needs. Two of my favourites down this particular alley are the coffee shop and ice cream shop, right beside each other. Seriously. Two of my favourite things, right there! Too awesome. Despite that, we ended up in the gem shop and found a couple of nice stones for Middle Boy.

Oh, and I found this bench, too. I wanted to claim it, but the boys wouldn't let me take it home.

Our next stop was this not-quite-as-posh alley. With the exception of one shop and a chess set there wasn't much worth discussing here. The store in question is named Yesterday's Fun and is full of non-electronic games from.. well.. years ago. Some new, but mostly old. I had fun in here, though I didn't get anything. It was fun to look through their collection of Masters of the Universe paraphernalia.

And the chess set. From above.

I mostly put my camera away after this, as we went for lunch (Grotto's Pizza! Which was sadly entirely forgettable) and then the arcade; I wanted to play in the arcade, not take photo's of it, and play is what I did. I even won a stuffy from a crane machine! First try!

But, I shall leave you with these last three. I was at the beach and, though I was only physically "on" the beach for a few moments, had to have proof I was there.

I love the bricks on the streets! That looks really nice! Looks like a great place to spend a few hours! I could definitely walk around on those streets and do some shopping! The chess set is cool and Masters of the Universe! Ha! By the Power of Grayskull! Nice score with the DS! My kids love playing games on theirs! Thanks for sharing the fun adventure!

I love that you did the entire #MarketFriday in black and white, it really picked up on the overcast vibe and pumped up the post. I love the little back alleyways there in Rehoboth! I actually didn't realize that you didn't like the beach! But then, I should have guessed, going to Miami Beach and going for a bike ride... always fun, but, most people would run to the water!

I know, before you say it, you are not most people. We accept that.

Anywho! I love the chess game people-sized. :) I will bet the kids loved that. You are a pretty cool dad going to all the fun stores, however, I have a feeling it was a three-way deal. I say we go back for the bench!!! That would look nice anywhere in the house or out... or in your office. You totally missed out on that!

The pictures were great, the overcast day made for some terrific mood shots. Loved the beach and especially the dunes. Thanks for being a part of #MarketFriday. Of course, I know you dropped the link. :)

Thanks! It was an overcast day and I was taking pictures in really harsh light, but I think these turned out pretty well.
