The Newest Addition

"No more," is what I keep telling myself.

I think a lot of things have begun - or continued - with the words "No more." In fact, I have a fairly strong suspicion that Poe had the words "No more" in mind for The Raven, but it was a bottle of whiskey that turned it into Nevermore.

But I digress.

"I need no more phonographs."

"I don't."

"I have enough."

Well, now I'm certain that I do.

Just lookit that baby! A $100 steal at a "moving my parents and downsizing them" sale.

This particular phonograph is full of interesting things. It has no markings and violates the Victor Talking Machine Company's patents of the day by having a closing door over the horn, which makes me think that the cabinet was custom built for whomever purchased it.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of this particular phonograph is the reproducer; it has three different styluses, allowing it to play Pathe records (which use a vertical, "Hill and dale" recording style), Edison records (which also use a vertical recording mechanism, but require a different stylus for the type of material), as well as "standard" vertical-cut records.

I'm currently unable to get the reproducer to turn to be able to play Edisons or Pathe's, so for now it's strictly a vertical cut machine, which is fine, because that is what about 95% of my record collection consists of anyway.

This happens to also have an electric motor, not spring powered. It only took about 5 minutes to splice a new cord into place to get it to spin, and it plays really nice. I'll record from it soon. It's not nearly as loud as my other phonographs, which means I can play it more often, of course!

So, now I can say with something of a certainty: no more.
