Three Tune Tuesday - Phonographs of all Types!

avatar

It's #threetunetuesday again! I have Yet Another Selection of 78rpm goodies to share from my ever growing collection of pre-1923 78rpm records.

I have become completely infatuated with these records and the music from this era. Music labels were one of The Next Big Thing in the 1910's and 20's and there were a lot of companies looking to get in on the action. It was easier for companies to start a record label than it was to start manufacturing phonographs, which required not only a much larger capital expenditure, but often required waiting for the expiration of patents. The primary phonograph manufacturers of the day were Columbia, Victor, Edison and, to an extent, Brunswick. Today I've got songs played on a Columbia, Edison, and Victrola.

Vamp Me

This is a song on the Vocalion label. Vocalion records were interesting because they used brown shellac, not black like the others. The recording process can use any material, really, and the colour is not restricted to black. Shellac was used because it was durable and easy to manufacture (and easier to break), and black because it was a common colour.

This is played on a Columbia K-2 phonograph.

Echoes from the Movies

This is a fun song played on an Edison, and I dare you not to tap your feet to it or start bouncing with it. There will be songs in here you recognise. It's an accordion solo and really a lot of fun. This is an Edison disc played on an Edison "London Upright" (LU-37) phonograph.

Turkish March

This is one of the newest records in my collection and I was really excited to see this in the store. The store owner had no idea the gem they had on hand. No, it's not worth anything, but anyone - anyone - my age who grew up in Calgary will know this song immediately. It now ranks up on my list of favourite records.

Played on a Victrola VV-IX.

This is a post filled with a lot of nostalgia, I can feel the great joy you get from these records from your terrific collection.

I was listening to the audios and I felt that I was traveling back in time to epochs where only imagination and this beautiful music can take me. Thanks for all the beautiful sensations that your publication has transmitted to me.

This is really beautiful music and congrats for being a great collector!

Thanks for stopping by and listening! I'm glad you enjoyed the songs. I think they're so much fun and almost mysterious, like ghosts from the past. I certainly have more to come!

Aren't they so much fun?? I've done two live internet shows now to stream these, and I'm having a lot of fun doing that, too. You should stop by and listen some time!

Seriously, when I saw The Turkish March sitting in that bin I must have giggled a little and knew it would be mine. That song was a staple of my every single lunchtime as a boy.

We would watch that show straight up into High School.

I played it for my kids. They played it in band at school for a warm-up. Ha.

These are like stepping into a time machine and going back to the 1920s. Keep them coming man, as I for one am really enjoying them and thanks for sharing them on Three Tune Tuesday too, which is amazing.
