It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.

I know, I post Three Tune Tuesday on Wednesday. It's done by design! I run a Three Tune Tuesday livestream on Tuesday, then post the songs the next day. Want to be the first to hear them? Tune in live!

I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.

This weeks collection are three great's from Six Brown Brothers.

The Six Brown Brothers, later known as the Five Brown Brothers, consisted of six brothers: William, Tom, Alec, Percy, Fred, and Vern Brown. The band was led by Tom Brown, who was also a skilled soprano saxophonist. The Brown Brothers lived in Lindsay, Ontario until 1893, when they moved to the United States.

The Six Brown Brothers started their musical career in circuses, where they played various instruments and performed acrobatic stunts. They soon discovered that the saxophone was a novelty instrument that attracted attention and applause from the audience. They decided to form a saxophone ensemble and added comedy and clowning to their act. They often performed dressed in clown outfits, with white makeup and one in blackface. Their repertoire included ragtime and minstrel group acts, as well as original compositions and arrangements.

Passion Dance

One of their most famous recordings is Passion Dance, also known as La Danza Appassionata, a Parisian fox-tango composed by Clarence M. Jones in 1916.

Egyptland

Egyptland is a fox trot composed by James W. Casey and released in 1919 by Victor Records.

The Six Brown Brothers were known for their skillful and expressive playing, as well as their humorous and theatrical stage presence. They often wore costumes and performed skits and stunts while playing their instruments. They also experimented with different types of saxophones, such as the sopranino, the slide saxophone, and the contrabass. They influenced many other saxophone players and groups, such as Rudy Wiedoeft, Adrian Rollini, and the Six Blue Devils.

Peter Gink

In the early 1900s, the Six Brown Brothers were performing at the Palace Theatre in New York City. During one of their shows, they introduced a new song called “Peter Gink.” The song was a lively and humorous tune, featuring the brothers’ incredible instrumental skills and their ability to play multiple wind instruments simultaneously.

The song’s lyrics depicted the misadventures of a fictional character named Peter Gink, who was always getting into amusing and outrageous predicaments. As the brothers performed the song, their energetic music and comedic timing had the audience roaring with laughter and singing along.

Three Tune Tuesday (TTT) is initiated by @ablaze.

I run a live stream of my TTT songs every Tuesday at 12:00pm EDT, then take that stream and share the songs from it here, on Hive, on Wednesday (or occasionally Thursday). These songs are all old pre-1923 78rpm records from my collection, played on my antique phonographs and recorded with a well placed microphone. Like what you hear? Come listen live!

Six brown brothers. Does this mean they were all like tan/brown skin? Is that what the brown is referring to . Anyways interesting and unique songs as usual

Brown was their family name; Tom Brown, William Brown, Vern Brown, etc. They literally were brothers, and they were very instrumental in bringing the saxophone into public consciousness.
