Music Advent 2021 - Day 5 - Stille Nacht
Today's song is Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Getman for "Silent Night, Holy Night," performed by Ernestine Schumann-Heink in 1908. This is one of the oldest records in my collection, and was played using a soft steel needle on a Victrola VV-IX, or Victrola the Ninth.
This particular record cost $3 in 1908, which equates to about $90 today, and there was only the one song on the record. It was pressed on the Victor Red-Label, which was Victor's premium label for their top tier stars. It was also a 12 inch record, as opposed to the more common 10 inch phonograph record of the time, which would have also undoubtedly factored into the final price.
I hope you enjoy, sung in German, Silent Night.

I did enjoy it! I love the old records, my father and uncle were huge collectors of them. Oh, the vibrato. What a great record you picked up.
I know this is one you will be enjoying for a long time!
Yes, this one really has quickly become one of my favourites. I think one of the thoughts that mesmerizes me the most about it is that is is 113 years old! It's like listening to a ghost from the past.
That's it! Right there! It is 113 years old. and still plays rather nicely. Someone bought that 113 years ago. Was it curiosity? I think not, not for that price. I cannot imagine a record right now that I would pay $90 for.
Maybe.
