Street Portraits from Night Bangkok with 50mm

Aperture 1.8 on a 50mm lens often creates an unpleasant salad of blurry objects in the background when you shoot in the streets. Sometimes, you lose characters who turn into soap clouds with indistinct faces. But, sometimes, it makes the image. I love this picture of boys from Bangkok Chinatown, and it won't be as good if the main characters weren't separated from everything else in the back- and foreground.

Dragon Boys

Drums, cymbals, and a boy in a dragon costume jumping to the rhythm; two more teens, not involved in the show, collect money. This is a street music band in Bangkok Chinatown. I see them from time to time during my visits to Yaowarat Street. Travelers aren't their primal target, they predominantly work with shop owners and vendors. I assume the idea is that the dragon brings luck and profit to those who pay. It could be an official band of the community with a tradition behind it.

Matter of Luck

This was on March 9, 2023, I was having another walk in Chinatown. I followed the band for several minutes but, at some point, I felt I had no luck with them - yes, this irrational feeling - no matter how hard I tried to capture their emotions and the rhythm of the show, nothing worked. I decided not to try to squeeze good photos out of this scene and left the dragon procession.

Half an hour later, I stumbled upon them again. They walked in a dense crowd, sweaty from the heat and work but happy. Two of them, the cymbal player and the drummer, were chatting cheerfully to each other. While they were passing by me, I took a few shots, two of which are presented in this post.

The second shot is less technically correct but the scale of the emotions is even greater - probably, you must be a teen to laugh that much. 🙂

Ability to See

It's amazing that, sometimes, you just get an ability to see. Now, everything seems like "I've been here too many times, everything seems so ordinary", and, then, you suddenly start noticing colors, shadows, lights, and people's emotions.

50mm is Rather about Street Portraits

DSC_9214.JPG

50mm is rather about street portraits than about street photography in its classical look. And that saddens me since I have no 35mm in my lens collection.

DSC_9248.JPG

But this portrait-ness is also an opportunity.

Someone can object you can come closer with a wider angle and do the same. My answer: sometimes, you can but people will oftener notice you and you'll take more images of people reacting you.

Like, Bangkok street cats, being photographed with a 50mm, look kind and tranquil but, when you shoot them with a 24mm, they often look being afraid or defensive.

But these are just words... Skills of many of us don't allow us to use the most of the opportunities a 50mm or other decent lens gives.

Leaving

DSC_9216.JPG

It seems to me that this man was also inspired. Perhaps, the energy of the dragon dancing to the rhythm of cymbals helped us? 🙂

I always leave Bangkok Chinatown too early - I have to travel on a bus to outskirts, amazing ones but they are far from Chinatown...

Nice pics! How do you take portaits of people without getting awkward? Do they realize you’ve been taking pics of them closeup and not just the streets? I wanna do this someday but dunno if I can haha. They are really good with all the emotions shown😄

Do they realize you’ve been taking pics of them closeup and not just the streets?

I usually take images of people who are involved in some activity: chatting, working, eating, etc. So, they often don't notice me since they are busy while I am quick and take images on the go + I usually choose crowded places. Sometimes, they notice, sometimes like this 🙂

But it happens differently.

For example, these teens from Chinatown were busy with the fun. This time, I stopped to take pictures. There were many people passing by between me and them, and these passersby a sort of hid me but it was a challenge to avoid these passersby getting in the frame which would ruin the scene.

How do you take portraits of people without getting awkward?

I just want street photos too much. 🙂

Good candid images of people and scenes on the streets wouldn't be rare if taking images of strangers was easy. Only what is hard to get is valued. Working with your own emotions, attitude, and mood is part of the process. Understanding of this helps me.

I don't think that I violate any moral rule by taking images of strangers, nothing to be ashamed of. And I don't think that feeling hurt that someone has taken an image of you is mentally normal (except very rare situations). So I focus on searching for scenes and creative mood.

Yes true I also don’t think there’s something wrong with it. In fact I’d be happy to have someone take candid pics of me in the streets or something cos it’s really different when you just pretend to not see a camera man and pose for a “candid” pic hahah. I just have these anxieties that some people may react aggressively of their pics being taken lol and of course for law enforcers as well (if maybe they’re illegal in some places). Good job with these!!

it’s really different

it is 🙂

some people may react aggressively

If so, you'll get nice shots of a mad person 😁

If you start practicing, you will gradually learn how people react. Maybe you should walk with someone in the beginning to feel safer.

Good job with these!!

Thank you! 😊

50mm is the most lovely. Still, I have longing to buy a 35mm one day...

Thank you! 🙂

And that saddens me since I have no 35mm in my lens collection.

My guess, having 24mm (or, 16-35mm, in my case of Canon) is enough; streetphotographer cant travel with a weighty arsenal of lens on his back. Great selection of photos. I almost feel the life is an easy non-stop festival all over the place.... which ofc is not true, right? 😪

True but I have an extra "slot" for a lens in my travel backpack. As for photo walks, I usually have 50mm with me or 50mm+24mm. 35mm could be an option to have in my city backpack sometimes. (I also have a bulky 70-300mm but I take it only when I have a special mission.)

No idea how I will like 35mm. And no sense to think about it since I am not going to buy it. Better to save money for (better and wider) traveling to India with 50mm.

Great selection of photos

Thank you.

Apparently the same about me, 50mm+wide-angle or tele- on special occasions, ideal receipt.
