The salt ponds in Ibiza island.

avatar

These are the salt ponds of the Ibiza, salt ponds that were already exploited by the Romans. The curious part of these aerial photos is that from this angle, you can see the different tones and colours of the ponds, something that is impossible to see from the ground.

These tones are produced by the presence of different living organisms when the salt concentration is very high. One of them is the artemia (Artemia salina), a micro crustacean that, as the salinisation of the pond progresses, increases the pink colour of the pond, so when it has the greatest influence is just before the salt is harvested.

There is also an algae responsible for this colour, the Dunaliella salina, which is microscopic and although it belongs to the green algae, its colour is red due to the large quantities of beta and alpha carotenes it contains.

None of these micro-organisms are harmful to humans and they occur in all large concentrations of salt in the world.

Unless stated otherwise, all the pictures and the words are mine.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look.

We can see clearly the ponds where the harvesting of the salt is already over, and ones that still the salt have not been collected.

From the ground level we can not see the different colours that the seawater takes by the microorganisms.

Thanks for posting to our group! Interesting information about the way the salt is mined. I would think they could market even more by leaving the pink color!

You are welcome @ksteem ! And many thanks to you also for keeping this wonderful corner dedicated exclusively to aerial images. It was much needed!

Regarding to the salt, it does not keep the colour of the water, although I saw that in some places it occurs, the grains are slightly pink, but our salt have not that glamour.

Many thanks for your kind words and also for your support. It is really motivational.

Regarding to images, It is not allowed to fly with drone over the salt mine. As you can see in the up right corner of the first image, the salt ponds are located next to the airport of Ibiza, and consequently is strictly forbidden to fly any kind of drone. The pictures were taken in a permitted fly with a helicopter Robinson R44.
