“Cienfuegos is the city I like the most” BENNY MORÉ

Good beautiful PINMAPPLE community.

”Cienfuegos is the city that I like the most” phrase said by the singer Benny Moré and with this I start with great enthusiasm my visit to this beautiful city called Cienfuegos in Cuba, known as the “Pearl of the South of Cuba” a small city has managed to seduce thanks to its mixture of the elegance of its cultivated French spirit and its Caribbean style.

Let’s start!!

In my first stay I walked along its boardwalk the day was a little cloudy but I could admire its bay and its flying vibes, this boardwalk goes from the Paseo del Prado to Punta Gorda, this last place is an emblematic representation of Cuba, with colorful buildings, palm trees and sea views.

Admiring it, I see that it is an ideal place to celebrate parties such as the carnivals they do in this area, as well as a social meeting point for the inhabitants, offering a typically Cuban atmosphere.

In addition, in this area there is also the Palacio del Valle, an architectural jewel inspired by the Spanish Arabic style, the Hotel Jagua and other very beautiful buildings that are found here and to top it off it is especially valued by lovers like me of sunsets due to its location and the very beautiful samples it gives.

At my next stop I headed to the Boulevard this emblematic pedestrian street that has undergone a significant evolution over the years. Formerly known as San Fernando, in honor of Fernando VII, and later renamed Juan O’Bourke in 1902, in honor of a prominent Cienfueguero patriot born in Trinidad. However, despite the official changes, we all continue to refer to it as Boulevard.

This street has witnessed the transformation of Cienfuegos, from its days as a road traveled by southern cars and trams until it became the epicenter of the commercial life of this beautiful city.

The Boulevard is a meeting point for its inhabitants and visitors, with a variety of places that give it life and dynamism. Its first two blocks, from Prado to Hourruitiner, lost vehicular access in 1984, becoming a pedestrian space with renovated pavement, light fixtures and stonemasons and very clean.

This is one of the buildings that are located on the edges of the Jose Martí Park El Palacio de Gobierno, this emblematic building declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005. Built in 1819 and expanded in 1840, it has been a presidential residence, town hall and prison.

Its neoclassical colonial style stands out for its symmetry and a dome inspired by the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. Preserved since May 1950, it is the headquarters of the Provincial Assembly and a symbol for the cienfuegueros, although its interior is not accessible, its exterior is worthy of admiration.

On the other hand, we find the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Purest Conception, also known as the Cathedral of Cienfuegos, is a magnificent example of sober neoclassical architecture. Built in 1869, this beautiful structure rises gracefully over the city’s horizon, with its whiteded walls and red tiles that capture the essence of the colonial style.

However, what truly distinguishes this cathedral are its beautiful French tinted stained glass windows, considered the most artistic in the country. These stained glass windows adorn the windows with a rich color palette.

Another of the constructions we have in these surroundings is El Colegio San Lorenzo, whose construction was completed in 1927, is erected as a monument to education in the city. This prestigious educational center opened its doors on October 1, 1929 as the School of the Home of Santo Tomás, intended for girls, and on December 1, 1932 as the School of Arts and Crafts of San Lorenzo, dedicated to men.

It was often misinterpreted as an example outside the neoclassical, the San Lorenzo School is actually an eclectic building that incorporates elements of the classic line of the 19th century. Its access through Santa Isabel Street is adorned with a small circular pediment as a dust coar, while the triangular pediment stands out for its allegorical motives to the prosperous city.

Next to the San Lorenzo School I found the Tomás Terry Theater, which was proposed to be built in 1863 by Tomás Terry Adán, financed by a donation of 60,000 pesos. After his death, his sons, Francisco and José Emilio, fulfilled his wish in 1887, allocating 115,000 pesos to the project.

The construction, by engineer Lino Sánchez Mármol, adopted an innovative style with horseshoe-shaped boxes. The first stone was laid in 1887 and the work was completed in 1888. This theater, designed to promote culture and benefit the community, is a symbol of the historical and artistic richness of Cienfuegos.

This Jose Marti Park is surrounded by beautiful buildings like these and others such as the provincial museum among others, undoubtedly a very beautiful point to admire in the city.

To finish my tour I went to the Paseo de Prado where I could not miss a small stay with the statue of the Benny, and be able to walk for a while enjoying the strong breeze that runs through this street.

Some data were extracted from the ECURED

I hope you enjoyed this travel experience as much as I did. Maybe later you will visit these places on your own. There is always something new to discover in each place, something different to explore. I hope you live your own adventure and enjoy it as I have done.

Chao Chao…
