Here comes the New Year
look how modestly dressed
she knows our expectations
and is not here to impress.
No fancy promises
or elaborate reception
She seems as cautious
of us as we are of her.
Still she gives off a lovely light
walking down that darkened street
and her eyes are twinkling
when with ours they meet.
What’s that she’s carrying,
under her arms and across her back
What gifts unknown and trials
will she present with wise tact?
Make way for her, clear out the old
do not be timid, she favors the bold
Forget the hurt and many mistakes
she’s here to celebrate, have some fun!

Love this! Yes, I think many of us are wary of big promises as we've been let down many times before. But as the poem concludes, that doesn't mean we should resort to apathy or pessimism. Instead, it's time to stop putting our faith in "gurus" and "prophets" and seize the life we want!
Thank you, for your intelligent, enthusiastic response. I think bitterness or cynicism is having failed at life. We are responsible for our hearts, irrespective of what may be… Small, kept promises are the best way forward, that I see. Curious what made you think of (fake) gurus and *prophets*?
Thank you! The phrase "fancy promises" made me think of big claims made by "gurus" (usually to persuade you to buy their products and services). But maybe I'm reading too much into it haha.
Haha ... I was thinking of the fancy promises we make to ourselves/others, drunk on the idea of a New Year and a New Us... But, with time, we become more sober and modest in our expectations, especially, in times of crises.
That said, I do not believe the author is an authority on what they write -- so your readout is as good as mine :) (Also, I happen to be fascinated by false prophets/fake gurus and covered the trial of Keith Raniere for an HBO documentary, The Vow)
