Buying Cows at the Market 🐄 🐮

I’d been to the cow market, in Colombia, around a year ago & it was something of a traumatic experience.

Overwhelmed by the suffering of all the caged animals, I did not pay attention as I was entering the bathroom there and banged my head so hard that I had a concussion for around two weeks!

Mercifully, this time was less stressful. For one, it was less crowded & I kind of knew what to expect.

This time, however, we were not there to just take a look, but to purchase cows for our farm —preferably, under 2 years old.

This meant that I got to attend my first cow auction which was an interesting experience. We all sat on bleachers, alongside farmers/cowboys & listened to an auctioneer speak in rapid-fire Spanish, as they paraded cows of all shapes and sizes.

We bid on ten cows, presented in two groups of five, and got them at a good price—so we left quite pleased with that. Tomorrow, we return to finalize the arrangement, give the cows their shots & figure out how to get them to the farm.

After the cow auction, we saw the horses arriving; again, all shapes and sizes, and I stopped to admire their effortless grace.

In contrast, I was taken by the fierce beauty of these two hawks that swooped down to perch, nearby.

On the way in and out of the market, I was impressed by the quality of the leather products that were being sold. Look at the beauty of this horse saddle — I’d proudly display that in our farm!
