My Examination Ritual

Examinations, a term mostly related or used for only people who attend school but as far as I am concerned the term reaches beyond school.

Education stretches more than just to students in a classroom. Education entails anyone seeking some form of skill or learning from someone. This as I understand means someone learning a trade is seeking education, someone learning how to sew is being education, someone learning to cook is undergoing education and so much more. In a way they’re all students.

At the end of the end or their learning, all these people are tested. Those learning to cook are maybe tested everyday with the foods they prepare as well as those for sew. These are all forms of education.

Now to the side of school going people as I currently am one, we’re tested as well. We are tested at the end of a semester or term which we call end of semester examination. There are mid semester examinations as well but some of us do not hold in very high regard.🤫

I take it this topic we’re meant to talk about about how we prepare for examinations has got to do more with our main examinations. That said, our end of year or semester examinations.

So what does Yahuzah do when examinations is approaching? What’s my ritual?

I am the kind of student who kind of likes to leave things late. I’m one of the members of the last minute association 😅. Well maybe not entirely but I still am a member. On regular days when it’s not exams, I go to class to “study”. I try my best to catch up because truthfully, a lot of what goes on in the class isn’t entirely grasped. Sometimes I don’t even pay attention. Because of this most of the work is left on me and I have to study to try and not be too far behind.

When examinations are approaching, that is the time I usually read a lot. During those times, I don’t spare a lot of time. Any minute I get where I can read even a line or two, I take it. I am the sort of person that usually prefers to finish reading my slides before I step into the examination hall. I want to have an idea of at least everything I am supposed to know in the semester. I always want to finish my slides before I use past questions because they are a great help.

Mostly because I leave things a little bit too late, I don’t get to do this but I get to cover a considerable amount. You know as students when there’s no threat of examination we don’t really take things seriously and so although I go to class everyday to read something it’s not as serious as during exams.

One funny thing is that it seems when you’re studying during the semester when it’s not exams, things are a little bit too much to grasp but that’s not the case during examination week. I don’t if it’s just me but damn it’s like everything you read you understand outright. I’ve had experiences where I have struggled with a topic the entire semester but once I look at it before my examination, I am like huh is this what I’ve been fumbling with? Like it’s that easy during those times😅. Maybe that’s why I am motivated to read more during examinations week.

What else does Yahuzah do?

I don’t really enjoy having discussions or having a question and answer session during examinations week. I am not against it. I mean if you want to have a question and answer session with me or a discussion, I will have it with you no questions asked but it is not something I will initiate. Discussions do help and are effective but I feel the only way I can get something out of a group discussion is when I have studied and I have something to contribute. I don’t just want to sit silently and listen to people give and explain. That one doesn’t help me.

I don’t also discuss before I enter the exams hall or even while I am in the exams hall. I don’t like to get myself panicked. I believe by having discussions before the questions paper are put before me, I would panic if I didn’t have an answer to a question asked by myself or by a colleague so I try to avoid it as much as I can.

I enter the examinations late because of some of these things. I am the type that I want the question paper to be put in front of me as soon as I am seated. But during the examinations if I have to ask a colleague a question and the opportunity presents itself, I do ask😅.

Another ritual I have for examinations is the no talk about the questions after the paper. If after a paper I hear or see people trying to find answers to their solutions, I just walk past you. If after all the papers I am interested in finding out a solution, I do so. I believe checking for the answer to an already submitted paper while I have another to write could just negatively affect my preparation for the next if I had the solution wrong.

So here you have it, these are some of my rituals for examinations.

Thank you.

What's done is done. It's not like those checking the solutions to the questions after the exam will be allowed to go correct their answers.
Thank you for sharing.

Seriously I always say this. You’re done with the exam and you’ve submitted. Checking for solutions just stresses you out

It's gives emotional trauma too. Especially when you finally see the results were not what you expected.

Yahuza, so you are one of the eleventh hour reading candidate 😂
Well the good thing is that you still study from time to time before the main examination. Like me, if I read only when the exam is in days, then it's only craming work I will do...I start reading from day one of my lectures for the semester... and unlike u, group study was my life saver..lol

Yes oo. I’m one of the members.😂

A lot of people enjoy group studies but I don’t know why it’s never been my style.

I have experienced such too. Well, everyone has what works for them. There are some students who may not do well in their exams if they don't start reading immediately the semester begins because as soon as exam dates are announced, they become too tensed. Thanks for sharing dear.

Well that’s very true. I guess we don’t have to judge them for what they do and just do what works for us

Exactly, everyone is fashioned differently. Thanks a lot.
