When I saw the story, mmm, it didn't seem very appealing, but it wasn't bad enough to keep me entertained, and it actually made me laugh in many parts. The animation was acceptable, so it wasn't a bad idea to watch it. Also, I understand the manga is from the '90s, however, I feel they adapted it very well. The character designs are clean and manage to modernize those manga features characteristic of that era. The athletic sequences (especially Sano's high jumps) are animated with remarkable fluidity, using subtle rotoscoping that gives weight and realism to the athletic movements.

It's a typical story of a girl dressed as a boy, and the protagonist falls in love and all that. The best part is that he finds out she's a girl from the start. However, what I would criticize is that Mizuki's justification for crossing the world and enrolling in an all-boys boarding school is, by today's standards, behavior that borders on obsessive harassment. Well, even the female protagonist notices it, especially in this second season, but it's not a reason to abandon the story. At least she's been a positive presence in Sano's life and has motivated and healed him in many ways. Something that definitely manages to captivate you are the boys, both the protagonist and the secondary characters. They're the most dynamic and have justifiable changes and human conflicts, although I personally dislike the secondary character a little; because Mizuki, the protagonist, goes overboard with the damsel-in-distress act, haha.

Well, the other thing that's quite appealing is that, despite the comedic elements, I feel the story touches on some pretty universal human emotions; the central message about motivation and self-improvement is impeccable. The series demonstrates how the unconditional support of one person can pull you out of the pit of depression or failure (Sano's arc with athletics).
