Supporting the Unsung Heroes of the Venezuelan Earthquake || LOH #298

A few weeks ago, I noticed some Venezuelan accounts here on Hive sharing the sad news of an earthquake disaster that had hit their country. Genuinely, I had no idea how bad it was until I went on the internet to read up on it and watch a few videos. The first page I read was from Wikipedia. From the information documented there, I learned that the earthquake affected both northwestern and central Venezuela, causing a massive damage across the country. The most depressing part of my reading was learning that over 5,000 people had died so far, more than 16,700 had been injured, and even worse, thousands of people were still missing.

This broke my heart because I could not begin to imagine how much sorrow many families have been plunged into because of this earthquake. The pain must feel like having a part of your heart ripped out while still wondering if the vacuum created in it will ever be filled. It’s such a difficult place to be, and my heart goes out to every single Venezuelan in this trying time.

Truly, I am pained by this ugly occurrence, but I’d like to think that there is still some hope for humanity as I learnt that the volunteers and the IRC are working tirelessly to save the lives of children who have been trapped and ensuring that other citizens who sustained injuries are well attended to. These people are amazing, and I thank the stars for them every day.

If I had the opportunity, I would love to meet them virtually and express my genuine appreciation for the wonderful work they’ve been doing for humanity. I understand that most of them commit to this cause from the bottom of their hearts, so public recognition may not really matter to them. But I know how much a heartfelt thank you would mean, and I’d genuinely love to say it as a form of encouragement.

The second thing I would like to do is advocate for generous donations that will help provide everything they need while on this rescue mission. I mean, these people have loved ones who worry about their safety while they’re out there saving lives, so I believe the least I could do is set up a donation process where we all can contribute some funds to help take care of their general well-being and also purchase more protective gears needed throughout this period.

Something else I wouldn’t skip is supporting their mental health. Having a job or commitment like theirs is no small challenge. Going through the difficult process of saving lives while witnessing gory scenes of badly injured people, identifying dead bodies, and having to evacuate people in a rush can be depressing. So, I believe that if I can support their mental health by organizing group therapy sessions and counselling, they will be more emotionally grounded. Most importantly, they’ll know that there are people like us care about them deeply.

I know all these are not enough to measure up to the huge sacrifice they’re making for humanity, but I am certain they will go a long way in making them feel seen, appreciated, and encouraged to continue saving lives.

If you’re a Venezuelan or you know anyone who has been affected by this earthquake, please accept my sincere condolences. I am steadily rooting for your country to rise from this terrible incident, and I hope that many families are reunited with their loved ones or at least get closure from this painful experience. These rescue workers certainly have loved ones who care about their safety while they save lives. Making donations for their overall well-being and to acquire more necessary protective equipment is very valuable. Thank you for sharing your thoughts,

Looking back in my career as a Nurse I had too many times witnessed the process of dying and death from a controlled environment. I've learned to separate my feelings for my former patients I've come to love and put on a professional and clinical decorum yet there is always compassion in my heart. I cannot begin to imagine the stress and chaos these Rescuers have to endure under dangerous conditions and often with urgency and time not on the victim's side. They are human, and they need time and medical resources to cope, most of all they deserve all our gratitude and support.

It has been a heavy blow for all of us. It affects us deeply to see how, so close to us Venezuelans, so many of our brothers and sisters have suffered this catastrophe.
