The Fortress of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is part of the historic center of the city of Saint Petersburg. It was the first construction that Peter the Great ordered to be built, to defend the exit to the Baltic Sea from possible enemy attacks during the Northern War. Its initial name was Saint Petersburg, later it was changed in honor of the patron saint of its founder. It is located on a small island between the Neva delta and the Kronwerk channel. The designs for its construction were made by Domenico Trezzini (famous Swiss-Italian architect). The completion of the work took about 30 years, from 1703 to 1733. It is currently considered the best preserved 18th century military fortification in Europe.

From the moment the Fortress of Saint Peter and Saint Paul lost its military importance, it became a political prison. There, after the Communist Revolution of October 1917, several adversaries of the regime were arrested. Among them, the son of Tsar Peter the Great, the older brother of Lenin, the writers Dostoevskiy and Gorkiy, the Ministers of the Bourgeois Provisional Government and members of the Romanov family, among others.

The spire of its bell tower reaches 122 meters high and is crowned by an angel. This has become a symbol of the city and legend says that as long as it is in that place, protecting the city, no enemy will be able to defeat it.
