Hello, friends at Foodies Bee Hive—it’s a pleasure to say hello. Today I want to share a little story with you about those afternoons when we suddenly feel an overwhelming urge to eat something sweet. I don’t know if this happens to you, but I always find that around four or five in the afternoon, I crave something delicious to go with a good cup of coffee. However, I don’t always have the chance to go to the bakery at the nearest mall—which is where I love to wander around at that time of day.

Since I didn’t want to leave the house today but the temptation was strong, I decided to quickly figure out a way to make some delicious homemade donuts sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. I had a very specific, mixed craving: even though chocolate is my absolute passion and I love it with all my heart, I didn’t feel like having any today. Instead, I wanted to enjoy the softness and shape of a donut but with the unmistakable flavor of a cinnamon roll. So I set about balancing what I wanted in my mind and gathered the ingredients I had on hand: three cups of self-rising flour, one heaping tablespoon of butter, two tablespoons of sugar, a pinch of salt, vanilla, cinnamon, and one whole egg.

The first thing I did in the kitchen was mix the flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt in a deep bowl. Then, I made a small well in the center to add the whole egg, a generous dash of vanilla, and ground cinnamon so the dough would have a much richer flavor from the start. I began kneading patiently, using a teaspoon at first to incorporate the wet ingredients into the dry ones. Once the mixture had taken on some consistency, I transferred it to a clean countertop to knead it with my hands until the ingredients were completely combined.

To make sure the dough wouldn’t stick to my hands or the countertop, I had to gradually add a little more flour, dusting it in and kneading it well until it was perfect. Once it reached that workable consistency, I dusted the surface with flour and rolled out the ball of dough with a rolling pin, aiming for a thickness of about one centimeter. To cut out the shapes, I used an aluminum cup with a narrow rim for the large circles, and with a large pastry tip, I cut out the center of each one.

I didn't waste the scraps and excess dough; instead, I combined them again and rolled them out to make more and more pieces. In a deep pot, I heated a generous amount of oil over medium heat and fried them until they were golden brown on both sides. Meanwhile, I prepared a container with a lid filled with sugar and cinnamon; as they came out of the oil still hot, I put them straight into the container and shook it gently so they’d soak up that aromatic mixture.

To top off this quick snack, I brewed a pot of black coffee that had an incredible aroma—perfect for pairing with my freshly made, piping-hot donuts. It was the perfect solution to satisfy that sudden craving that’s always haunting me, proving that with limited resources and a little ingenuity, we can treat ourselves at home. I hope you enjoyed this quick recipe and that you’ll give it a try the next time you have a similar craving. That’s all for now—see you in the next post!
