Hello, Family & Friends! It’s so nice to say hello again! Today I want to share with you a very sweet—and somewhat whirlwind—story that happened to me recently. It’s about a surprise gift for a very special little girl named Fabiana, who just turned 9. She’s in school with my youngest son, Diego, and besides being classmates, I consider her a very dear friend. She’s one of those sweet little girls who always greets me with so much warmth, and it turns out we’re also neighbors in a nearby building.

It all started because I have this lovely habit of keeping track of the kids’ birthdays and posting their photos with a message in the school group chat. So I was well aware of her special day. However, we had a rough day with a power outage that didn’t come back on until 8:00 p.m. When the power finally came back on, I reached out to her mom and asked how the celebration was going. To my surprise, she replied that they weren’t going to sing “Happy Birthday” to her because what the little girl really wanted was a phone as a gift. In a very playful tone, I told her that wasn’t right—that if they didn’t sing to her, she’d be stuck with last year’s birthday.

Her mom told me she was going to bake him a cake the next day. But just to be on the safe side—and since I like it when birthday kids have their party on the actual day—I came up with the idea of whipping something up for him on the spot. To top it all off, my conventional oven is still acting up, but that didn’t stop me for a second. As soon as the power stabilized, I grabbed a special microwave-safe pan I have, whipped up the batter as fast as I could, and—to my great relief—the cake turned out super fluffy with an incredible texture. To cool it right away, I placed it directly in front of the fan, rushed out to buy the eggs I was missing, and whipped up the meringue at top speed to make a pretty decoration.

Her mom texted me later to say she was about to put her to bed, but I asked her to give me half an hour. I hadn’t told her I was making the cake myself—I just asked for a little more time. I set about decorating it with whatever I had on hand: pink food coloring to add some cute details, a few little butterflies, and gold sprinkles on a tray in the same shade—not to mention the little candle I’d already prepared.

I went with Diego to his building, keeping the cake well hidden behind a wall so he wouldn’t see it ahead of time. Although his mom had already sung “Happy Birthday” to him earlier with some cheesecake cupcakes and had posted about it on her social media—explaining to me that this was what she’d planned for the kids given the situation—we had a very different surprise in store.

Fabiana was completely blown away, with a huge smile that lit up her whole face when she saw us. Diego went up to the apartment with her, her little brother, and her mom to officially sing “Happy Birthday” to them. I thought it was a beautiful moment, since I take advantage of these opportunities to teach Diego to be a thoughtful, caring child and to share with his friends. Since my knee is still a little sore and their apartment is on the third floor, I decided to wait for them downstairs, sending her a giant hug and my best wishes from the doorway.

A little while later, Diego came downstairs, and Fabiana came with him to bring me four little pieces of cake for us to try at home. The truth is, it turned out absolutely delicious, and above all, seeing her so happy made all the hustle and bustle completely worth it. Fostering these gestures of friendship and camaraderie in children leaves an indelible mark on their hearts. On top of all that, my little friend got to sing her birthday song and celebrate her 9th birthday just as she deserved. Thanks for reading, and see you in the next post!
