Purchasing coffee plants for the farm

Greetings, Hive Garden community!

This is my first post in this community, and it’s my first post about plants and agriculture. I always try to keep an eye out for flowers in whatever garden I’m in, and if there aren’t any, I get seeds to fill my patio with colors and butterflies, but this time it’s about something a little different—though still full of flowers and fragrance. A couple of months ago, I moved back home, to a region where people primarily make their living from coffee farming. That’s why I’ll now be a little more involved in growing coffee, and I’ll be delighted to show you all about it.

Este es mi primer post en esta comunidad y es mi primer post acerca de plantas y agricultura, siempre procuró estar al pendiente de las flores del jardín donde me encuentre y si no hay consigo semillas para llenar el patio de colores y mariposas, pero esta vez se trata de algo un poco diferente, aunque tambien florido y aromatico, hace ya un par de meses me mude de nuevo a casa, tierra donde se vive predominantemente del cultivo del café, es por eso que ahora estaré un poco más involucrada en su cultivo y estaré encantada de mostrarles.

Today I want to tell you a little about the progress of the new plantation on my mother’s land. It’s an area that was overgrown with vegetation and hadn’t been cultivated for many years, but now we’ve decided to plant some coffee plants to make use of the land. For the past few days, we’ve been visiting the site and clearing away the vegetation to make room for the new plants. But before that, we had to mark out the area using a string so the plants would be aligned, and then place a stake every two meters to mark where we’ll dig a hole to plant each one.

Hoy quiero hablarles un poco del avance de la nueva plantación en las tierras de mi madre, se trata de una zona que estaba llena de vegetación donde no se había cultivado nada en muchos años, pero ahora hemos decidido sembrar algunas planta de café para aprovechar el terreno, desde hace algunos días hemos estado visitando el lugar y retirando la vegetación, para sembrar las nuevas plantas, pero antes de eso fue necesario marcar el terreno usando una cuerda para que las plantas queden alineadas y luego marcar cada dos metros con una estaca para marcar el lugar donde luego se abrirá un hoyo para depositar la planta.

The plot covers approximately 2 hectares, and we purchased a total of 1,000 coffee plants to plant there. Since I wasn’t used to the whole coffee-farming process anymore, everything excited me—from visiting the place where we were going to buy the coffee seedlings to plant, to—of course—not just going to watch but actually loading the seedlings from where they grew, all the way to where the truck was parked that would transport them. Our plants are the largest; they’ve been growing for a year since they were planted and are ready to be transplanted to the field. The variety purchased this time is called “Brasil,” but other varieties of native coffee have already been planted in some areas of the land.

Se trata aproximadamente de 2 hectáreas de terreno y se adquirieron en total 1000 plantas de café para sembrar en el lugar, como ya no estaba habituada a toda la movida de la caficultura todo me emociona, desde visitar el lugar donde íbamos a adquirir las plántulas de café para sembrar, por supuesto no fui solo a observar y cargue las semillas desde el lugar donde crecieron, hasta donde estaba el carro que las trasladaría. Nuestras plantas son las más grandes y llevan un año desde que fueron sembradas y están listas para ser trasplantadas al terreno, la variedad de planta que se compró en esta ocasión es una Llamada Brasil, pero ya en algunas zonas del terreno fueron sembradas otras variedades de café criollo.

Then there’s the difficult task of getting it there, because the path to the plot is steep and slippery—especially given how much rain has fallen in recent days—and the worst part is that there’s no vehicle access, so we hired some workers to help us with that arduous task. I haven’t been back to the plot yet, but I’m excited to return, even if it’s an exhausting hike, and to plant my first seed in the ground.

Luego esta la difícil tarea de llevarlo porque el camino para acceder al terreno es empinado y resbaladizo, sobre todo por la cantidad de lluvia que ha caído en los días recientes y lo peor es que no tiene acceso para vehículos, por lo que fueron contratados algunos obreros para que nos ayuden con esa ardua labor, aun no he vuelto a visitar el terreno, pero estoy emocionada por volver, así sea una caminata agotadora y sembrar mi primera semilla en la tierra.

Now that the plants have been planted, we still have to wait a few years to harvest their beans, but time really does fly, and before we know it, we’ll be drinking our first cup of coffee from our own crop. I’m also very excited to document and show you the entire process of this coffee plantation, because even though I was born and raised here and am used to farming, this is the first time I’ve been involved from the very beginning of this venture.

Sembradas las plantas aún debemos esperar algunos años para cosechar sus frutos, pero realmente el tiempo pasa volando y cuando menos lo esperemos estaremos bebiendo nuestra primera taza de café de nuestro cultivo. También estoy muy emocionada por capturar y mostrarles todo el proceso de esta plantación de café, pues aunque nací y crecí en esta tierra y estoy habituada al cultivo, es la primera vez que me involucro desde la fase inicial de este rubro.
