"Santiago on foot."

My greetings, beautiful Wednesday community.

Today I bring you a proposal for a walk along the "Doble Vía" avenue, which is the main road that crosses the town of Santiago de la Vegas, my little town.
It had been a long time since my feet had walked on the asphalt of these streets, as I always pass this way in some kind of transport.
I decided to walk along this avenue to stretch my legs a bit and give my baby a ride in his pram. It was a walk that I enjoyed with a bit of nostalgia because it reminded me of the times of my adolescence when we would leave the discotheque in the middle of the night and there was no transport to return to our homes. We would walk from the disco which is a little over four kilometres and we were always a group of ten boys or more. What times those were...! Times of carefree fun, lots of dancing and loud music. In short, times gone by that will never come back, but well enjoyed and as we say here: "que me quiten lo bailado".

Hoy les traigo una propuesta de paseo por la avenida "Doble Vía" que es la carretera principal que atraviesa el pueblo de Santiago de la Vegas, mi pequeño pueblito.
Hacía mucho tiempo que mis pies no pisaban el asfalto de estas calles, pues siempre paso por acá en algún transporte.
Resulta que me animé a caminar por esta avenida para estirar un poco las piernas y darle un paseo a mi bebé en su cochecito. Fue una caminata que disfruté con un poco de nostalgia pues me hizo recordar los tiempos de mi adolescencia cuando salíamos de la discoteca en plena madrugada y no había transporte para volver a nuestras casas. Caminábamos desde la discoteca que son un poco más de cuatro kilómetros y éramos siempre un grupo de diez muchachos o más. ¡Qué tiempos aquellos...! Tiempos de diversión sin preocupación, mucho baile y música alta. En fin, tiempos pasados que no volverán, pero bien disfrutados y como decimos por acá: "que me quiten lo bailado".

This worn-out and unmaintained sign indicates that from this point begins the locality of Santiago de las Vegas, a town on the outskirts of the Havana capital, the place where I was born and have always lived.

Este cartel malgastado y falta de mantenimiento indica que a partir de este punto comienza la localidad de Santiago de las Vegas, un pueblo que se encuentra en la periferia de la capital habanera, lugar donde nací y he vivido siempre.

Fifty metres from the sign is this monument, the only one of its kind in all of Cuba dedicated especially to the tobacco growers in homage to their contribution to the struggles for independence and in recognition of the vegueros who rose up against the Spanish colonial abuse to which our island was subjected at the beginning of the 18th century.

A cincuenta metros del cartel se encuentra este monumento, único en toda Cuba dedicado especialmente a los tabaqueros en homenaje a su contribución en las luchas por la independencia y en reconocimiento a los vegueros que se alzaron contra el abuso colonial español al que estaba sometido nuestra isla a principios del siglo XVIII.

Nearby, behind the monument, there is a café that has changed format and name several times since my teenage years. It was open all night and was always lively with music. Phew! It no longer operates at night, nor is there any music. The pandemic has come to put an end to a lot of joy.

Contiguamente, detrás del monumento, hay una cafetería que ha cambiado de formato y de nombre en varias ocasiones desde la época de mi adolescencia. Funcionaba toda la noche y siempre estaba animada con música. Ufff!!! Ya no funciona de noche, ni hay música. La pandemia ha venido a acabar con muchas alegrías.

Just across the avenue is Guadalupe Park (or at least that's how we locals know it). It has a large grassy area with leafy trees that provide shade for the benches that surround it. My sister and I used to come here with our parents to ride our bikes when we were kids.

Justo al lado opuesto de la avenida se encuentra el parque Guadalupe (o al menos así lo conocemos los habitantes de acá). Tiene gran área de césped con frondosos árboles que ofrecen sombra a los bancos que le rodean. A este parque solíamos venir mi hermana y yo con nuestros padres a montar bicicleta cuando éramos niñas.

Next to the park is the children's playground "Ruiseñor" where a large number of children of different ages gather and share a fun space with their families. As can be seen in the photo, some elements of the playground are undergoing light maintenance and painting.

A continuación del parque se encuentra el parque infantil "Ruiseñor" donde se reúnen gran cantidad de niños de diferentes edades y comparten un espacio de diversión junto a su familia. Como se aprecia en la foto, está siendo sometido a un mantenimiento leve de pintura a algunos elementos del parque.

About 200 metres from there I come across the children's circle where my son went, where children attend from the age of one year and then move on to schools at the age of five.

A unos 200 metros de allí me doy al encuentro del círculo infantil al que fue mi hijo, donde asisten los niños desde que cumplen un año de vida y luego pasan a las escuelas a los cinco años.

Two blocks further on, two state-owned establishments that were obligatory visits for our family every weekend when I was a child. They were the "Dominica" malt shop, where they sold dispensed malt, and next to it the "Coopelita" ice cream parlour with its little umbrellas in the middle of the tables that protected us from the sun's rays. Opposite these two places, another must: the pizzeria "El Vesubio". I still remember the taste of the pizzas with that delicious tomato sauce. These places no longer function for the purposes for which they were created, but every person in this town remembers with great nostalgia the good times of socialising that took place here.

Dos cuadras más adelante,dos establecimientos estatales que eran de obligatoria visita para nuestra familia cada fin de semana, cuando yo era niña. Se trata de la maltera "Dominica", donde vendían malta dispensada y a su lado la heladería "Coopelita" con sus sombrillitas en el centro de las mesas que nos resguardaban de los rayos del sol. Frente a estos dos centros, otro de obligada asistencia: pizzería "El Vesubio". Aún recuerdo el sabor de las pizzas con esa deliciosa salsa de tomate. Ya no funcionan estos locales con los fines para los cuales fueron creados, pero cada persona de este pueblo recuerda con gran nostalgia los buenos momentos de socialización que aquí se daban.

On this tour I could see how people have made their way into businesses such as cafés, room rentals, photo studios and even laundry services.

En este recorrido pude apreciar cómo las personas se han abierto camino en los negocios como cafeterías, renta de habitaciones, estudios fotográficos y hasta servicio de lavandería.

Other more laborious businesses, such as working with the land, are seen in these plots where small vegetables are harvested and sold to the population.

Otros negocios más laboriosos como lo es el trabajo con la tierra, se ven en estas parcelas donde se cosechan pequeñas hortalizas y se venden a la población.

And yes, we have had a traffic light in this small village for a few years now! Also at one of the corners of this traffic lights, there is an agricultural and livestock market.
A hundred metres from here begins the ascent to the hill of Cacahual, another neighbouring community.

Well friends, this is the end of my little journey today, which I enjoyed because I travelled back in time to the past. It's not that the "past was better", it's just that because of how good it was, it is kept with great affection: Friends who are no longer here, funny anecdotes and so much that we spent together....

¡Y sí, tenemos un semáforo en este pequeño pueblo desde hace unos pocos años! También en una de las esquinas de este semáforo, un mercadillo agropecuario.
A cien metros de aquí comienza ya la subida hacia la loma del Cacahual, otra comunidad vecina.

Bueno amigos, hasta aquí mi pequeño recorrido de hoy que me disfruté pues viajé en el tiempo hacia el pasado. No es que el "tiempo pasado haya sido mejor" es que justamente por lo bueno que fue, se guardan con mucho cariño: Amigos que ya no están, anécdotas graciosas y tanto que pasamos juntos...
