Burgess Shale: A Yoho Hike

avatar

Heyyy Heyy Hivers!!

Welcome to a post about a 7.5hr hike in Yoho Park. This excursion took us from Emerald Lake, to Yoho Lake to the Burgess Pass, returning us to Emerald Lake. All on a gorgeous mostly overcast beautiful summer day!

We started down the Emerald Lake trail going just over a kilometer to reach the Yoho Lake trailhead.

As you can see, this part of the trek boasted amazing views! Mountains, forest, alpine meadows and a captivating glacier fed waterfall!

Taking us to our destination! Yoho Lake. There's a cute campground that was set up in 1906 by The Alpine Club of Canada. They held their first gathering at this location!

We opted to take the longer more adventurous route back via The Burgess Pass, which is home to the site that is protected and full of fossils called 'The Burgess Shale'. Here's what this area looks like incase you're wondering!

Pretty isn't it? First we look up the mountain and then down the mountain. You can see Emerald Lake in the distance.

Onward, we go...

Looks like a great trip! If you left out Yoho lake, and just went to the burgess shale, how long would that take you figure?

Hey Dave! To get there it's a fairly decent accent, (which i came down, and it took just over two hours.) So, i would guess getting there would take about mby 3-4.5 hours round trip. The protected shale area is close once you get thru the tough accent. It's fairly flat after that. It's very easy to access the Burgess Pass route off of the Emerald Lake Trail when you go the forest route past Cabin 33. It was a great day of hiking! I am still tired. Lol

If you take out the part of going to Yoho lake, still super worth it? Reason being is that I've been there already and it was great in fact.

Yes. Wish i had more time to spend at the lake and more time to search for fossils. It's a rewarding hike. A treasured experience.

The beauty is really mindblowing in full bloom summer anyway. Could not have been more perfect. Verrrry sacred place. The trail up from Emerald seems like it once was traveled by horse, the trail seemed so ancient. Who knows tho, i don't!! Haha, it's insanely lush and there's water flowing beneath in spots. I hope you get a chance to do it. Gosh, it will be a steep one. I hope you're ready!!! Lol

The trail up from Emerald seems like it once was traveled by horse, the trail seemed so ancient. Or at least it took great effort to create the trail. Who knows tho, i don't!!
