On Thursday, my friend Puchi took his crop of “jojoto corn” to the city of Barquisimeto. He had to pay the workers because he lives here, in the capital of Lara State, and his corn is in Curarigua, on our land, where our families are from. Our families are very close—just like everyone else in the village—and that’s why I’m concerned about the strategies he’s developing to adapt and get ahead in this criminal economy we have in the country.

During my visit to Curarigua, I accompanied him to the field—about two hectares that he managed to clear on the outskirts of the ranch—where he planted his corn seeds to see what would happen, as a way to supplement his full-time job here in the city. That weekend, it was time to water the plants because the corn was already tasseling, and at that stage, you can’t let them get too thirsty. So we got to work for a good part of the day.

It struck me that almost all the families are planting crops—whether beans, corn, or sugarcane. The problem right now is water; although there has been some rain, it hasn’t been enough to fill the watersheds or to meet the needs of the large estate that stretches across the entire Curarigua Valley.

Everyone is betting on the planting season, some with the last resources they have left. It is well known that agricultural supplies are sky-high, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to cover the costs.

The farmer's enthusiasm remains as strong as ever; the die is cast. I just left a message for my friend Puchi to see how this harvest went for him; I hope he was able to make a profit. I've seen firsthand all the effort he put in to make his investment pay off.

Dedicated to my people, to every dream and seed that is sown in the ground so that it may blossom and bless my people.

What extraordinary photographs, my brother! You have a great eye for capturing the best scenes nature offers. Furthermore, the story struck me as very profound, perhaps because we understand the effort it takes to build a life in our own country and with our own business. This post certainly makes you think, very good. A big hug to you!...
