Todo el mes de junio es super especial para nosotros aquí en el estado Lara en Venezuela, es que se conmemora una de las tradiciones mas populares de nuestra tierra, las fiestas de san Antonio de Padua son muy seguidas en el ámbito religioso pero mas que todo en la parte cultural. Nuestra familia es muy cercana a todo esto, porque nuestras raíces son de un pueblo que históricamente es reconocido como uno de los precursores de todo este movimiento.

La prima Yisel lo celebra todo los años en su casa, lamentablemente no había tenido la oportunidad de asistir porque vive en un caserío de difícil acceso, sin embargo esta vez nos realizo una invitación con suficiente tiempo de antelación para poder planificar y que todo el grupo pudiera asistir a tocar los sones de negro.

Hi, hivers.

The entire month of June is very special for us here in Lara State, Venezuela, because we celebrate one of our region’s most popular traditions: the festivities of San Antonio de Padua. These are widely observed in a religious context, but even more so as a cultural event. Our family is deeply connected to this tradition, because our roots lie in a town that is historically recognized as one of the pioneers of this entire movement.

Our cousin Yisel celebrates it every year at her house. Unfortunately, I hadn’t had the chance to attend before because she lives in a hamlet that’s hard to reach. However, this time she invited us well in advance so we could plan ahead and the whole group could go and play the “sones de negro.”

Nos encontramos con una gran celebración, había un grupo musical numeroso, casi que nos duplicaban. También con un grupo de baile super organizado, lo cual nos sorprendió de buena manera para poder aprender de esta tradición que ellos tienen desde hace muchos años y que por se un caserío distinto a los que generalmente frecuentamos, cuentan con otras costumbres y otras formas de vivir el folklore.

We came across a huge celebration; there was a large musical group—almost twice as many people as us. There was also a very well-organized dance group, which pleasantly surprised us and gave us the chance to learn about this tradition they’ve had for many years. Since this is a hamlet different from the ones we usually visit, they have different customs and ways of experiencing folklore.

El caserío debe estar ha aproximadamente 2 horas de la ciudad de Barquisimeto, lo que mas me impresiono fue que al salir del asfalto, la carretera de tierra esta hecha justo en el medio de una quebrada, es decir, hay que transitar literalmente por donde pasa el agua en las temporadas de lluvia. Lo otro es que es una zona bastante árida, se pueden observar muchos cactus y cujíes, arboles que generalmente se dan en estas zonas bastante secas con baja tasa de precipitaciones.

The hamlet must be about two hours from the city of Barquisimeto. What impressed me most was that, once you leave the paved road, the dirt road runs right through the middle of a ravine—in other words, you literally have to drive through where the water flows during the rainy season. Another thing is that it’s a fairly arid area; you can see many cacti and cujíes—trees that typically grow in these very dry areas with low rainfall.

Al llegar, nos atendieron muy bien. el grupo se coloco en una zona donde pudiéramos apreciar el acto cultural, mientras esperábamos nuestro turno.

Como siempre nuestro acostumbrado amarillo, esta vez era una luz marcada en este ambiente marcado por los colores tierras del pasto y la tierra y las casas construidas de barro.

When we arrived, we were treated very well. The group was seated in an area where we could enjoy the cultural performance while we waited for our turn.

As always, our familiar yellow stood out—this time, it was a striking accent in this setting marked by the earthy tones of the grass, the soil, and the mud-brick houses.

Aprovechamos para compartir con la familia, la prima nos saco distintas cosas, comimos sopa, carne de chivo asada, helados, caramelos y distintos pasapalos. En verdad la atención fue muy buena y nos hicieron sentir muy bien en cada momento.

Todo eso mientras afinábamos los instrumentos y preparábamos el acto que nos tocaba en lo próximo y que era muy esperado por todos por el cruce cultural que significaba.

We took the opportunity to spend time with the family; our cousin brought out all sorts of things for us to eat—we had soup, roasted goat, ice cream, candy, and various snacks. The hospitality was truly excellent, and they made us feel very welcome the entire time.

All of this took place while we tuned our instruments and prepared for our upcoming performance, which everyone was eagerly anticipating because of the cultural exchange it represented.

Las expectativas cubiertas de principio a fin, es mas, considero que fueron superadas al máximo. Lo único que puedo resaltar y que tal vez pudo mejorar la situación es que el viaje fue de ida y vuelta, a la media noche regresamos a nuestras casa en Barquisimeto. Algunos de los muchachos tenían compromisos al siguiente día y no podían aplazar.

Lo cierto, es que fue un gran compartir. conversamos con los maestro musicales de la zona, intercambiamos saberes e ideas que se pueden plantear. La reseña histórica de los movimientos, estuvimos conversando con uno de los fundadores de grupos musicales de gran envergadura en el país. También hablamos con el encargado de cultura del estado Lara, así que fue una experiencia de mucho crecimiento, además de lo que significo el encuentro familiar.

My expectations were met from start to finish; in fact, I think they were exceeded to the fullest. The only thing I can point out—and which might have improved the situation—is that it was a round-trip journey; we returned to our homes in Barquisimeto at midnight. Some of the guys had commitments the next day that they couldn’t postpone.

The truth is, it was a wonderful experience. We spoke with music teachers from the area and exchanged knowledge and ideas for future projects. We discussed the history of the movements and had the opportunity to talk with one of the founders of major musical groups in the country. We also spoke with the cultural director of Lara State, so it was an experience that fostered a lot of growth, in addition to the significance of the family reunion.
