Got disqualified from my internship... What next?

The last time I wrote here, I wrote that I had been working around the clock on a very competitive internship and a web development program. I was stressed but I figured there would be some gain in the end.

Right after writing last week, we were ambushed with a very unbelievable task for most but I was willing to approach it confidently. We were asked to create a design system of a Mixed Reality application and design a demo of how the application would look and also create a presentation explaining how our application would work. All this was to be done in 2 days.

The task was outrageous. There was so much to do in such little time but I got to work immediately. I knew exactly what was being asked of me but the extras were the tricky part. A design system takes months to create and I've never been great at presentations.

I worked for 12 hours without stopping on my design system and then I worked for a day on my design finally I put in a few hours into my presentation because I felt it had to be the least important thing in that assignment. I was wrong.

I put my heart into everything I did and during the review, one guy looked at my work for 45 seconds and said I failed. No compliment, nothing. He just said "fail". I felt heartbroken because my design was better than all the designs my friends made and they confirmed it. They were shocked when they found out I had failed so they just prepared to fail as well.

Out of 4 of my friends who were in the same stage, only 1 of us made it through and he was shocked because his design wasn't half as great as mine. He just made a nice presentation.

I left the Slack channel a few hours later to give myself some peace and decided to focus on my web development program that I have been slacking in for a long while. It's been a tough learning process so far but I want to see this through.

The goal at this point is to have something to add to my portfolio every week. I'll already be putting myself ahead of the lot by adding web development so I might as well let people know I'm a much better designer now than I was before I got into that program.

So, starting this week, I'll be editing some of my projects and adding to my portfolio. I'll also be collaborating with the new friends I made from the internship to design some group projects.

Finally, I informed my friend who is still in the program to socialize with other people so I can continuously get information about their tasks and work with them until they get to the final stage. I look forward to learning and getting the internship experience without receiving the pressure and discouragement that comes from being in the program.

My year didn't exactly go as planned career-wise but I've gathered a lot more skills this year than I initially thought I would and I'm proud of myself. The job market keeps getting tougher so I know I need to keep levelling up to reach the height I need to attain.

This was one of my designs but not my final submission on Mixed Reality

The job situation is unique because where people are needed they are let go, and where people aren’t needed, they claim massive checks, pensions and packages to stay complacent.

Part of my game isn’t just independence from this system, but self-sufficiency through earnings from sharing my experience. I’m not quite perfect at sharing, but like you’ve been doing- experience and tactics we pick up from work scenarios does transfer.

Yup, you're absolutely right. I don't take my experiences for granted.

And it's crazy how much people earn from doing absolutely nothing where skilled people can't find basic jobs.
