I couldn't believe my eyes

"Are you sure you two aren't dating the same guy?*

My mum asked me one day with her hands on her hips, staring directly into my eyes like I've been caught red handed.

Why are you always quarreling with Victoria? Why can't you two get along?

I didn't know how best to explain things to my mom without sounding jealous . The real truth is, Victoria's attitude annoys me. She wants everything done her way. She loves to control people and manipulate them.

Victoria is my cousin sister. she came to live with us when she was five years old. She was older than me with just two years and we even attended the same school. My parents treat her like their own, and no one would ever guess she isn't my mother's biological child.

Everyone in our compound knew us as "cat and rat". We never got along. we argue over every little thing_ the size of food portions to house chores. I remember one day when she shouted:

"You think you're always right! you're just noisy"
And I fired back:

"Well at least I don't manipulate people like you".

Things got so bad that my mum got tired, sat me down and asked:

"Nne, what's the real problem? Are you two dating the same guy? What's really going on? I just don't understand you girls"

I nearly choked.

A boy? never. Victoria and I could never share the same boyfriend. She's not even my type. I just don't like her overbearing attitude. she always makes her decisions the only option. The worst part is , everyone either follows her or stay quiet but not me. never.

Then came this very day

Something unexpected happened.

A girl rushed into our compound with her mum, accusing me of breaking their window with a stone earlier that afternoon.

I was confused. I hadn't even stepped outside. I was inside watching a movie (my favorite show). I couldn't utter a word because the girl and the mother came with so much noise and fake evidence, claiming they saw me do it.

I was already breathing heavily, ready to defend myself. But before I could sax anything,a familiar voice cut through:

That's a lie. She has been at home with me the entire day. She hasn't stepped outside."

It was **Victoria's voice **.

I turned sharply. Was it sarcasm? Was she mocking me? Could she really be defending me?

"I've been at home with her the entire day. why are you people trying to accuse an innocent person?. If you want to find who broke your window, check somewhere else. or better still, ask those friends you bring home when you mum isn’t around.".

She continued with her hands folded, scanning everyone like she dared them to utter another word

For the first time, I found my voice joining her voice. We stood side by side, arguing back. And the more we talked, the more we gained confidence.

People were shocked. The neighbors, my mum, even the children.
I remember someone whispering in the crowd that day.

"When did this one start?"

The girl and her mother was confused. Everyone was dumbfounded. They finally apologized and left.

When the noise settled, I looked at her and we both smiled_ really smiled _ for the very first time in a long while. I thanked her.

That evening, we didn’t become friends. We just greeted each other properly _for the first time. i guess we were adjusting

Even after some month, people still shake their heads when they see Victoria and I together.

"I can't believe pigs can fly" one aunty muttered.

Honestly, they did that very day.

Because if anyone had told me I would one day need Victoria’s help, I would never have believed it.
